Title: Newbie needs some help!
Post by: magnus on 11 May 2005, 19:00
 Hey everyone!
Hello VW dudes and dudettes! My name is Magnus and i am in Greece.
I am a new VW fan as i just got a Mk1 Cabrio.

The car is a 1.5 carb model and i need some advice....actually i need alot of it.
The engine is in a bad state as it needs new rings and most likely a valve. I am planning on a fairly big restoration including a respray. I ve already got some part for it but need to see what i ll do with the engine. So far i ve managed to collect the following parts: Gearbox from a GTI, oil cooler, new bumpers, driveshafts and wishbones from a GTI and a few other bits.

My problem is this, as the car is a carb model i want to avoid converting to fuel injection, However i have been offered a 1.8 8V from a Mk2 for nothing. Is there a way to install that engine on the carb? I know the injectors are on the head and therefore cant be used. So i was wondering if i can use the head of the 1.5 on the 1.8 block. If this is possible what else will i need?
Would it be more sensible to just send of the original engine for new rings and do the head? Maybe if i sent of the 1.5 head to be modified for the 1.8 block? Or maybe a cheap and simple way to use the 1.8 engine with the carb from the 1.5?
Also are there any things i can do to increase power with out spending a fortune? I dont want a street racer or something, just a bit more poke.

Please help me out guys as i need to get the car on the road asap!
Best advise wins a few pinds if you ever are around this side of the world!

I should think the easiest and cheapest thing to do would be fit the 1.8 lump and fit a new carb, a twin choke webber of some sort. obviously , it's not straight forward but i'm sure it's quite possible.

i'm sure someone with greater experience will tell you more soon.

oh yeah, hello

I think your best option is to use the 1.8 head, just leave the injectors in, to plug the holes.

I also think the 1.5 head will fit the 1.8 block, however, I stand to be corrected.
