Title: Rigging up PC/Laptop to HiFi
Post by: Mr_Orange on 17 December 2011, 19:48
Hi,
I want to be able to play my MP3 files through my HiFi.  I've just bought a laptop, still have the tower and a couple of hard-drive caddies.  Would it have to go through the TV?  I know this can be done but don't know the required kit.
What have you'se got rigged up?  Any advice or pointers appreciated!  Thanks

To get your Laptop audio through your hi-fi you just need a 1/8 jack to phono cable.

Networked TV which can access files on any devices on the network.  Then the TV is hooked up to the DSP.

Did have an Airport Express, but that went pop some time ago - provided they've improved the unit that would be the best solution - it just works (using iTunes).... until it goes pop anyway....

Hmmm, I have a fancy setup too but I wasn't sure if that's what he was asking for.

Airport Express would be a good and simple solution then.

Not had any experience with it but it is a simple bit of kit. Oh and if it needs I-tunes it would be no use to me anyway.

I've got media PC's in the TVs and Hi-Fi wired via powerline adapters. (mainly so I can get the same connectivity to the man shed which is miles away)

Thanks for replies guys.  Was looking for a neater solution than a jack cable!
What is Airport Express?  My pal has a Squeezebox but I don't know if I've got the required hardware.
Can I rig something up from a hard-drive caddy and treat it like a jukebox through the TV?
TV (Scart old school until it goes pop then I'll upgrade to a modern one)
DVD Player
Laptop
Tower
Hard drive caddy
HiFi

Airport Express is a wireless network extender, from Apple which also has a jack in it and a USB connector.  You can jack to phono into your hi-fi from the Airport Express and it appears as another set of speakers in iTunes - so you just select whichever speakers you want to play your music through and away you go.  The USB is designed to connect to a printer.

I'd love for there to be a non-Apple solution like this on the market, especially as an Airport Express is about £70.
