My Mk5 Golf GTI seems to have developed an ECU fault or some other sensor fault. Can anyone help.
Since the start of the cold weather I get the coolant light coming on in the car and the message STOP on the display. However, all is wel lwith my coolant which was changed this year following my timing belt and water pump change. When I switch the engine off and on a couple of times the warning disappears and I can drive the car fine for hours.
Any clues?
Thanks
Stu

The coolant bottle has metal prongs - when there is not enough water in there it cuts the circuit and throws on the dash light ,What normally happens is the metal parts get corroded and it thinks the water is low.
You need to clean the prongs in the bottle or replace it like i did only £12

Yep I had the exact same problem. Coolant expansion bottle needs replacing.

Cheers guys that's helpful.
Might seem like an obvious question but to I need to empty the system in order to chage the expansion tank. Obviously there is nice pink antifreeze fluid in the tank

..............don't think so.Just remove the lower pipe(place container under it ).Once empty just remove the tank & replace with new one & re-connect pipe & refill with coolant.
