How Low Will You Go
-
Well I do not see the point of lowering a car so that you damage it as soon as you see a speedbump.
Guess I am getting older / wiser now and am happy with mine at standard height.

Fair point... The lowered stance is so much better though.!

When your mud flaps touch the ground
-
Think that it all depends on situation, like the journey and even the mood ......
coilovers.....why arnt they easier and faster to adjust??
I mean, tech has come on,but still isnt design for quick easy height adjust? (within budget anyway)
Anyhow weather changing/changed,everybody in there right mind wil be goin up ....and putting winters on!
-
I see most people are saying "tyres just tuck" the question is what's too low.
Never to low with air.
And once I get my new daily, mine will be low! Vr6 splitter 30mm off the road
-
danny monday low

If my eye's arnt lying to me i can see a bad flat spot just before the alloy goes back up into the arch..?? You thinking same place..?
-
That we did hah. Its the wishbone on the other side
-
All depends where you live & commute. I was lucky to have my pretty low and barely rub with sensible driving
(http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p119/leigh_harty/IMG_0214.jpg)
-
Vr6 are fake lows... us spec one and still lower ;)
-
too low is when you have to plan your trips to avoid speed bumps, but maybe I'm getting old before my time
If it meant I had to adjust my journeys or not be able to get into certain car parks etc its not worth it for me
-
Lowered looks great but there a complete pain in the arse to drive on our roads and some cars that are on the deck must drive awfull..
-

you just explained my dily drive anywhere
-
I don't think I've ever been stuck in my car. And I drive it everywhere. I could go down another 20mm on the coillies but its winter so I don't want too atm.
-
Mine is only down 40mm and still scrapes the splitter occasionally if I'm slightly over zealous going over speed bumps or coming off sloped driveways. Theres absolutely no way I'd go lower....but yeah, slammed cars do LOOK the bollocks.

It's only too low if you can go lower than Danny!

^^^ Going lower than this isn't too low, this is too low.

I think the 3rd picture sums it up pretty well. why would anyone want to drive around like that

I remember 30 odd years ago, when I was being a little shiat,my old man used to say "How low will you actually go.......blabla...until your scraping on your arso?"
Not that I actually listened of course,I mean who does...until the day when I have kids, they grow to teenagers, and you hear yourself repeating the same bloody words....
Now I think to myself how STUPID I was back then.......I guess why I calculated this simple theory .......
TOO LOW= SCRAPING YOUR ARSO= TOO STUPID= NOT BIG AND NOT CLEVER!!!!
-
Pah when I'm older, nice audi estate on air please.
-
Ok, then how about we all have just one kit that lowers 30mm no more, no less. Then we can add some hella quads, spray some longbeaches, or even better get some Borbet As or Schmidts (Both) on 9s a debaged gril is optional unless you want a Vento front end... Then we can all look the same and no one would ever complain.. yay!..
-
Sweet, count me in...baaaa.....

I agree to a point but all this scene stuff does my head in, what is the point in building / lowering a car to the point that you wear the subframe away or you can hardly drive it :undecided:

I've got a long way to go before my car is classed as a sheep wagon or scene sled as i don't have a single one of those mentioned "modifications". I must try harder to fit in somewhere....
-
Hey I have schmidts and 9's
But other than that it's standard and that's the way it's staying. I'm cleaning it up over next year so it looks like it just rolled out the factory.
-
I couldn't give a f**k what anyone thinks TBH
Its my car, Im the one that Drives it.
I do modifications I want, i don't follow no crowds..
Its one of the mintiest MK3's around.. I know it is because iv looked are at all the MK3's iv seen at the shows. iv looked hard at attention to detail...
and mine gets driven everyday.... it aint no trailer queen and it aint locked away so nobody else can appreciate it. it makes me smile on those days i feel sh!tty.. so any haters can go get fooked for all i care
In a nutshell.. we are all different and to some of us, having a car at standard height is as bad to us as what you feel about how low our cars are
-
I do modifications I want, i don't follow no crowds..
So you follow lots of crouds then, I'm confused.
-
The only Crowds i Follow are ones thats are Fit women haha
-
Got to love a mint mk3  getting rare now.
I also have one of the cleanest mk3's
Im getting beam, subframe, etc powder coated next year along with a good clean of the engine bay and then it will be as if it just rolled out of factory
-
yeah yours is a great example mate, on my list of faves actually
Mine was never a minter till i got it, had no rust, but thats all it had going for it. Iv made the car what it is today and thats one of the reasons it means a lot to me.. a lot of hard work gone into it!!
-
Cheers man. Likewise!
-
You are both spot on.
I no exactly what you mean.
I bought mine totally standered but very clean.
And have spent every free second cleaning it. (actuly obsessively cleaning it)
Saving up for the mods I want and like. And even tho it has fake splits on they are spotless and gleaming. As is the car. And that's what makes you feel good everytime you walk out of a petrol station back to your car and you think I made that. And you see other people having a good old look. Gota love petrol station light

Yeah man like yours too. It don't matter if you got fakes. Dude you got 5 kids to feed, I think you have done bloody well to get yours the way it is.
-
Ah cheers fella. U already no I think yours is better lol. Oooh can you feel the man love going on
But it is true it's all about making the most of what you have. It's not about how many mods you have. It's about the quality of the work you do on then ones you do have.
I'm lucky if I have £20 to my name at the end of every week but you can still make a nice car on a tight budget.

Respect yours is a nice car but on the other hand yours is a case in point when you look at the beating the sump takes, to me it is too low, yes it is used every day but is it practical :undecided:

No its not...and not legal if parts of his car not designed to have contact with the road are actually having contact with the road
That said...its sweet as :afro:
-
I have to admit it is not practical. If I said otherwise it would be a lie.
I never had issues at this height with the old 2.slow engine but as we all know, the S3 engine is much taller and does cause issues. If I was to raise it to make the issue go away, to make it worthwhile I'd have to go much higher (not just a few turns of the coils) and that's not something I want to do
I have other options if this don't work tho. And iv only hit the floor 4 times since the engines been in. I kind of know what roads I have to be carefull on.
Deffo not practical tho
-
Surely any amount raised, even 5/10 mm is gonna help and barely going to notice on the ride height?
-
Well yea it all counts but it would still
Catch even at that height. It is only on very extreme bumps in te road it has ever been a issue. Hence why it would still catch even if raised 10 mm
-
Why not a change of wheel/tire profile instead then?
It would look the nuts on some 17" TH2s.
That, on a 35 or even a 40 would give you scope to go higher without looking a numpty with arch gap issues.
-
Mate those are bad ass love em
Thing is I love the D90s too. Really suit the car and look good with the OEM feel
-
Big fan of those Compos myself.
-
its a sweet Rim for sure
Pain in the bumsie bumsie to keep clean tho.. daily driver
-
Man love is crazy in this thread
I'm the same with ride hight. Once it's down it can't go back up lol
Mine is a pain too. And I just bought a 5 series as a daily because of it :lipsrsealed:
-
ahh f**k that, use mine everyday, built it to use it and enjoy it.. too many VWs locked away never see light of day
didn't sound thousands to do that
-
Yeah nothing wrong with that.
Mine has 32,000 on the clock. And I want to keep it low, so yeah I will lock it away.
-
mines got 41k on the Clocks (well on the engine lol)
-
My valver is the same, it also has super low miles and lives in the garage.
I think Ive done 2k miles since ive owned it (four years)
One old guy ower and lived in a garage since new.............
-
what on earth have I stumbled in to?
I thought this was a lowering thread, but all I see is some serious man love going on. I hope someone brought lube because this is getting a little too hot under the collar for me. Later guys!
P.S - too low is when your missus has to hold her boobs driving down the road, because even a small bump hurts her.
I know this from experience. My ears are still in pain from the verbal onslaught I got on a daily basis.
-
No point keeping a car you won't drive.. enjoy it while you can..

That all depends on your wheel size though

Low enough to have fun getting off the old mans driveway...

Trust me when I say the photo makes the incline look much more severe. I have to reverse on otherwise it just wrecks the splitter...
And yet when it snows I can STILL get on and off and that bloody 7 series of dads parked next to it can't

That picture is so cool.!!
-
I had to take my splitter off to get out my garage. Seals touched too  but I got another garage now and keep the vr in that one
-
My splitter comes off every night and I reverse up the smallest ramp. Put a gti splitter on for now :undecided:
-
I need to see more pics of your car.
post in the mk3 appreciation thread

Will do mate, I'm rubbish at photo's!!!!

id be scraping there my splitter is near enough that low on flat road. look closely in my sig pic. im on 15" with 45 profile tyres
-
I intend to take mine a bit lower, might have lined up a set of coilovers for it so we will see. Currently running 15s with 50 profile, thinking 45 profile next tyre change.
I have to drive across the grass at work to get in the car park (when no-one is looking ) as they have put in a ridiculous speed bump that I completely ground out on. So god help me if I do go lower and I get to work the same time as the M.D one day
And Junior - Tweed is right, there definitely needs to be some form of thread for yours!

Ha!!!! Not sure it deserves to go on the appreciation thread though, lots of nice stuff in there...

Your ride inspires me
-
You take the splitter off every night??
don't be silly lol I have 3 cars and a work van.
only comes off when I take it out.
-
My deep splitter came of every night reversing up the drive. Hence the gti one (but only for now)...which still scrapes but does'nt pop right off...
Thanks for the interest in the car by the way, I'll try and give it a pollish at the weekend and start a dub rides thing...
-
When your mud flaps touch the ground
i saw this today in taunton by the motorway, mk3 dragging its flaps around the corner
-
Before I even drove mine after lowering it the mudflaps had to come off, they just look stupid on the floor otherwise.
-
Uprated Shock's and spring's or Coilover's.? Which do you prefer..?
-

If I throw mine into a roundabout I get mine to touch. It's my 'doing it awesomely' sound :P
-
those who have me on facebook know how low some of my cars have been, metro sump sat half inch off the floor at one point, had to fix the sump every weekend!
dmonday is known for the lowest cars, and in my opinion some of the best, he does what he wants without thinking of the consequences, until after, one reason I bought my mk3 estate was the way he made his look, but it was just too slow
-
Uprated Shock's and spring's or Coilover's.? Which do you prefer..?
Coilovers! You can go silly low for a show. And raise it up for some fast B road driving. Best of both!
-

yes but thats the MASSIVE vr splitter.....
be lower than that with a us splitter and then your at lows!!
new lows for me today.... could just get my finger under my sills, measures my finger its 1.1cm!! hahah
-
Uprated Shock's and spring's or Coilover's.? Which do you prefer..?
Coilovers! You can go silly low for a show. And raise it up for some fast B road driving. Best of both!
true but if money was an issue id prefer a decent shock/spring set up to crap coilovers. although if ride is no issue and you just want it slammed then cheap coilovers all the way
-
im on spax shock/jemex spring combo at the min but have been put cash aside for some goodish coilovers as it needs more lows some days but i live in speed bump hell lots of home made speedbumps round here
and yes its ture {dmonday } builds low cars ........
-
Just got my coilovers today putting them on on Saturday, don't wanna slam it cause I do drive down roads with some nasty speed bumps and I've got a VR splitter so thinking of dropping just 50mm or so.
-
Go 60 front 50 back.
Plus everyone that says cheap coilovers are harsh and sh!t have them slammed! Of course they will be sh!t. I ran mine at 40 front 30 back and thought they was awesome.
Then I dropped it right down and put on some stretched low profile tyres. That was a shock lol
-
Thanks for the advice mate. Running 50s tire wise all round and don't plan on going any lower with them. Might have to post some pics when it's done. Oh yeah and I went for cheap coilovers, only spent 800 on the car so not gonna spend half as much again on the suspension! Lol
-
So come on then.. Who is planning on raising there car for the snow..?
