The AM reception on my RNS510 has suddenly turned unlistenable. This has happended overnight.
Sad I know but I normally listen to a bit of Talksport on 1089 or 1107 on my commute in to London in the mornings. The FM reception though is absolutaly fine.
Any ideas what's wrong with it?

this could be a blessing in disguise or the car trying to tell you something

It could be a number of things Martin, the plug on the back of the unit may have come loose, the unit may have a fault with the AM reciever or it could be damage to the ariel. The AM signals don't like the screen ariel as much as FM ones do at the best of times, so are you likely to have damaged the ariel in any way?
Then again it could be a transmitter problem locally.

Thanks for the reply Andy. The reception was the same again today. I think I might pop it in to my local VW dealership for them to take a look.

My FM reception isn't that good either, I just put it down to the Aerial which is the rear heater element.
I was surprised I saw it on the MK6 as it was binned on the MK5 after the early cars and was replaced with the bee sting due to complaints of poor reception.

My cars in at the dealers today to have a look into the very poor AM radio reception I'm getting and it's turned out to be a fautly wiring loom located in the boot. The new wiring loom has been ordered and I will get the car back on Monday. Dammnn a GTI-less weekend!

As an aside.my GTD has sat nav and shark fin on roof, is this also radio aerial ? or is it still in rear glass ?

That's a result, in the fact that it's not a fault with the (expensive to replace/fix) RNS 510 unit.
Shame about having to rough it over the weekend though!

I too listen to Talksport and have to manually tune depending in which area I'm in. 1089 for most but also 1071 or 1060 (something). The AM band isn't the best generally, but does sound pretty bad in mine too.
Let us know what the dealer suggests pal

So will the car just be sitting in their garage over the weekend? Seems a bit excessive for a radio problem. Fair enough if the car was in bits.
You must have the patients of a saint

Yes it will be gathering dust in their workshop till Monday when the new part arrives. I could have picked it up in all fairness. Although they have promissed to give it a wash and hoover for me
