Title: Gear box rebuild
Post by: siddleg on 13 December 2011, 18:53
Evening all

i had the call today from the garage informing me that my slipping clutch is due to an oil leak and the only 1005 cure would be a rebuild with all new seals etc  :embarassed: he is replacing the dodgy seal but reckons it will only last so long if there is play in the shaft. gutted

how much is it likely to cost for a rebuild with seals, bearing and second gear synchro ?

You will be better off buying a second-hand box of egay an putting it on yourself, do the clutch whilst your at it using the money you have saved

yeah, there was someone listing reconditioned gearboxes for £350-450 on ebay, with everything done, or you can find a non-reconditioned working one for as little as £50

If an 8v, I'd just chuck another 2nd hand £50 8v 020 in.. If kr/abf, do it properly and do 02a cable change box, along with hydro clutch. All that along with a brand new vr6 clutch is still way less than £4-500! Cars future proofed for more power, and the mk3 02a boxes are stronger and lower mileage available. All 16v boxes crunch already, or are on their way out unless been rebuilt. When mine went there was no way I was going to spend that sort of money on a rebuild, when if I 20vt one day I'll need all the 02a bits for a proper job anyway.
