Title: Momo Steering Wheel
Post by: marcogolfo on 10 May 2005, 12:34
Well I just bought one of these off a mate.  My old steering wheel horn worked  but this one wont for some reason.  Everyone I have spoken to about there momo steering wheel jus nods and agrees that they cant get their horn to work either.  Is there a special way of wiring these up as i m  now a little worried coz i need it for the mot.  Checked the fuses and they all seem to be ok.  How do i get the ruddy horn to work
thx

I've got a momo corse on my golf and the horn works fine.
Have you got the earth wire and plate fitted???
There should be the existing wire which goes to the middle of the horn button.
Then there should be a second wire from the button which goes to an earth plate which fits between the actual wheel and the centre boss, without this the horn wont work.

yeah you need the earth plate etc as tobz said along with your existing wire to get horn to work, providing you got them with the wheel it should work, there only to wires to hook up??

the 2 wheels i got in my bug both had the plates missing, this was a right arse!!!, in the end i put a big yellow push button on the dash labelled 'HORN' and the friggin mot tester still missed it.... doh...

to test your horn take you stalks off and bridge the flap of metal to the steering column. that'll 'toot' the horn :)

Also check that the "flap of metal" as Dizzie puts it () is making contact with the copper ring on the base of your boss.

This is why my horn wouldnt work for a start when i fitted a momo wheel and boss kit, the copper flap needed a bit of adjustment ;)

Take the wheel off and bend the copper horn contact gently up, this makes contact with the ring on the momo boss. dont forget to add a dab of vaseline to it.

I had this very same problem when i fitted my momo steering wheel.  It was in fact as you mentioned before that flap of metal not making contact with the copper ring on the boss.  I couldn't manage to bend the strip far enough in the end, so all i did was wrap the strip in about a foot of tin foil then put it all together....and hey presto i could honk my way through my MOT! Complete bodge job, and i dunno why i am telling everyone this when i am trying to sell my Golf on here.....

Thank y ou for your replies.  It turned out to be that the metal flap wasnt contacting the bottom of the boss
It works now and I'm happy.  Also managed to get my rear windscreenwiper working so quite chuffed
cheers
