Title: loose bolts (Update)
Post by: cullygti on 10 December 2011, 12:45
heard a strange noise on the car yesterday as if the wheel was coming off so got home very slowly as didnt know what was going on and didnt like the noise on closer inspection 2 of my wheel bolts fell on the floor and the other 3 were all very loose im using standard bolts with 5mm spacers as im really low on coilies could i get away with taking the spacers off and still use the car or will they catch it as really put me off them now and im going to get 10mm hubcentric ones as they come with the longer bolts really  shocked me all the bolts being loose like that and the one was a locker bolt to cheers guys

Who did them up last and were they done with a torque wrench or just a bar?

Get some longer bolts, the standard bolts with 5mm spacers only go in a few turns. Also re-torque the bolts after 50 miles or so

Anything over 3mm should ideally use longer bolts.(just to be on safe side)

I had a wheel come off after i forgot to properly tighten mine, and also had the same as you just last week.

Lost two bolts that i found back up the road, and three bolts that were loose in the wheel ready to come out, nearly three wheeled it again

These were both due to the bolts not being tightened properly, not because they are too short

cheers dave could be the garages fault then as they were the last ones to touch them if im honest its made me a bit weary of using the spacers at all now

I always do mine up with a torque wrench, it's just as easy to over tighten them with a bar as it is to leave them loose. Check the bolts to see if the threads are damaged, could point to the garage doing them up with a windy gun (my pet hate as it's so bloody lazy and dangerous )

I will still run mine in absolute confidence, it was my fault that i didnt do them up.

the less threads in the hub, the less torque that can be applied to the bolt. Get longer bolts. It makes sense.

the garage used a bar which leads me to believe he has not done them up properly cos the driver side is all tight now my coilies are knocking their tits off just had them fitted with new top mounts all round super pro bushes new arb and arb bushes and the car is a night mare to drive it was fine going to the garage and now it feels like a bag of sh!t surely after replacing all that it shud be ok thus why he is having it back to see what as gone wrong

This ^^^

I aquired a golf earlier in the year that ran 18"s with 5mm spacers and the bolts were only catching on 3 threads.

that's fine,  but I can still get to the right torque with 5mm spacers and standard length bolts

I'm not trying to be clever, just pointing out the facts for safety reasons longer bolts are a safer choice.

No worries, I'm happy with mine the way they are and never had any probs, sounds like the garage that fitted cully's bits have bodged it a bit

what exactly did you get them to fit mate?

thats the problem with this country any idiot can open up a garage without any type of qualifications, and in this day an age the physics are more applicable with the advances in technology.

I take it the garage that you took it to was either a back street workshop or a fast fit centre. personally i wouldn't allow them to clean my car,

there should be legislation so that every garage technician should have a minimum of a level 3 NVQ or equiv,

I hate wanna be's, and uneducated (Technicians if you can call them that). they potentially could of KILLED YOU.

glad your not going to use them again.

had him to fit coilies new top mounts new arb super pro bushes in front arms track rod ends and steering rack ends and tbh the guy has been trading for a very long time with a gd rep but this is the first time i have used him and the car went to him with not much really wrong it was out of my own choice to replace some of them parts for piece of mind but now i cant drive it at all cos it really does sound scary

safety is priority, and he obviously did carry out the necessary checks which could of lead to you killing your self or someone.. sounds like a very dangerous mechanic in my honest educated opinion.

but hope you get the car sorted soon,, how much did you pay for all that work then?

I agree mate its made me fink twice now as i have been using the map to its potential and cost £200 with him supplying a few of the parts which i fort was reasonable tbh
