Looking for some general opinions on different diesels. I tend to go Morrisons a lot and thus use their petrol for the points. However recently I've been considering getting the BP Ultimate Diesel. I'm a consultant working on projects and do a lot of mileage as a part of my job (almost 10k in last 2.5 months). After discussing with a friend who uses the BP Ultimate, he reckons it's much cleaner and so on for the car.
Do you think there is a major difference between the diesels? Money isn't really an issue as the petrol is paid for. However if people notice the same performance in the MK5 and/or a mechanic who can verify it's actually not cleaner, then I'll stick with the Morrisons.
What do you guys reckon?

My old MK4 used to smoke like anything on supermarket fuel :lipsrsealed:
BP Ultimate; never seemed to run tidy on that and its the same for my Audi
Currently using Texaco and it seems to be happy with that in terms of both performance and MPG. Stuck some Total Excellium in and MPG dropped a few MPG so won't be using that again; which is odd as my MK4 performed best on it :undecided:
Personally I always fill up with the major brands and avoid supermarket fuel at all costs

Really? I've not noticed any smoke but then again I suppose I'm never in a position to notice. When I was warming up my car the other day (ice) I noticed there was a lot of grey smoke puffing out but I thought that was due to 1) cold weather and 2) engine has warmed up to ideal temp. Any reason why you avoid supermarket fuel then? You notice lower mpg and etc?
In fact - when I first started driving mine it did very good MPG actually. I hit 90mph and it was at like 54ish MPG which I thought was really good. Driving sensibly it would hit around 60-63. Now it's more 48 / 58. There's something to think about.

Mine was slightly tuned though, but if I put supermarket fuel in then it would be very noticeable
Neither the MK4 or the Audi seemed to perform well on supermarket fuel and MPG was worse :undecided:
Colder weather will affect the MPG so you will notice a drop :smiley: If it gets much worse then you may have an issue which needs looking at

It'll be interesting to see what others think. Next few tanks I'll clock my mileage and mpg more accurately with supermarket, premium and BP Ultimate.

Supermarket or not mine (passat 130) returns a steady 500-550 to a tank. Every now and again I'll stick some millers through it, just to give it a bit of a boost and a clean (as much as a detergent can in a fuel system).
The only difference is Cetane value and some engines don't like being messed around jumping from one value to another and will actually retard back performance to stop engine damage.

My old Audi a4 130pd loved the BP stuff, was so much smoother.
Current GTD seems to run best on the Texaco stuff when I look at my records. Still breaking her in though!

Replies have been interesting. I understand each car varies, as does a person's subjectivity on the matter. But I would have thought a cleaner fuel would be an all-round good thing i.e. prolonging the use of it would be all the better.
Also, can I ask what millers is? :lipsrsealed:

Just stick some into your tank when you fill up
No idea how it works :laugh: :laugh: Mr Slick might know as he's into that sort of thing :nerd:

I like using V power or Total excelluim and it runs better and feels smoother :wink:
