Virgin is coming to install my 30MB cable line getting excited 02 have been pre warned to cut off services by 9th, but its still going and the BT line still works!
Hope instalation goes to plan some drilling required!
They came and dug up the cable outside the house its all prept and ready to go!
I wonder what Utorernt is going to max out at? :undecided:
-
when they say a cut off date they usually mean by close of play on that day... mine ceased and swapped over in about a 10 minute period at about midday on changeover day

Thanks Guy was wondering when that would happen ? I thought it was midnight 1/2 an hour ago but still rockin!
Do they install a new master junction for the phone? I hope they will give me a new extention to bedroom as I'm not sure how the modems super hub box is wired, normal ADSL or some coaxial cable?
-
Jealous :lipsrsealed: Virgin laid cable in my town 15 years ago but they aren't aloud to turn it on due to them getting a monopoly :undecided:
Also bollocks to torrents get yourself on newgroups, you will max out at the maximum line speed. And you anit dependant on seeders.
-
Steve is that IRC chat thing direct file loads haven't been on one of those since 2000 random
Give me a link or PM some it might be interesting to see whats new!
Shame about your area mate!
Down in North Devon my inlaws got robbed by 02 they paid more and less speed than what BT was offering before realising BT limited the lease line to 02?
-
newsgroups you got to pay, think I pay $9.99 a month for unlimited downloads (normally do 200GB++ a month)
I use astra web. And bought a downloader about 5 years ago for $29.99, you can get free ones but the paid for ones are alot easier to use.
Then sign up to a couple sites. I use nzbmatrix which is free and has everything on it.
I download a 12GB HD movie in under an hour.
Doesnt O2 use BE unlimited's equipment :undecided: am with reseller of BE and had no problems for 4 years now

I'll give those a try TBH I've always found what I needed on the tinternet
BE is somewhere in the middle but if the exchange is BT you find they are the end supplier and sometimes give better speeds over anyone using there lines! I'm sure they might have broken a few competition rules in there time.
-
I am lucky to get 3-4mb where i live & never likely to change as i live in a village
-
Thats what I'm getting at the mo
-
Lucky git, still waiting for my FTTC in the exchange to become live, saw some BT engineers installing some on Monday so gotta be close!
-
I got the virgin 30meg this week, it rocks!
Nick
-
I have 30meg Virgin....Normal running rate is something less than desirable
Seen speeds as low as 3mb and as high as it should be...I do however keep getting money off the bill (£20 last month)
-
Never had a reduced service from virgin, even at peak times

With Virgin cable, they put the fibre cable into your house with a junction box somewhere (probably just inside the front room where the cable enters the house), then it's one fibre cable to your Virgin TV box and then another to the modem (you usually have to add your own router) and there will also be a split from that box for your master phone socket. You can either run a normal phone extension yourself from that (for your bedroom), or ask them to do it.
But if you want the modem/router upstairs you'll have to tell them straight away so that they put the cable for it up there, cos it's not really something you can extend yourself.

On phone and voda signal bad o2 got cut virgin never turned up rang customer see loads just came back Tuesday install not happy told them all I want is Monday 8am not pleased hanging out of window to type this be offline until fixed. Sewage pipe blocked today having a nice time see all replies later. Jay

I ping about 20mb on average, lowest around 10/12 and uploads average out at 1mb.
Not a bad service from Virgin at £35 pm (mates rates)
-
Still out no communication. Feel sad the date has been set 30dec so virgin has left me with nothing. It took 20 phone calls and a different mob no. Before they picked up whole time my 3g is limited. Vodafone are sending me sure signal box which. I can't use without broadband ironic. Spoken to them Virgin in India to bombay. So looking g for short term solution anyone check
:cry:whatlpay as you go or dial up for me I'm in a pickle
-
There are plenty of dial up choices but 56k
Just asked my father in law who used to have the Welsh tech number and he chucked it when switching from Virgin to BT
-
Can you get a pay as you go 3G USB dongle just to tide you over?
This sort of thing.

That's absolutely rubbish that you'll have no internet over Christmas.
-
Thanks guys for support I've been ringing everyday. 30th Dec just not good enough been looking at 7gb 15pounds 30 day roll over contract. Just don't need more expenses this year. Kids have nothing to watch. :lipsrsealed: I'm alright just family need it more than I!
-
Tell them you'll cancel the contract unless they install before Christmas. You are within your rights to do so.
-
Aye I would have told them to stick it by now tbh
You need to get on the phone again and throw a proper paddy
oh and www.ceoemail.com is your friend, 'cos it gives the big bosses email address:
neil.berkett@virginmedia.co.uk
You'll be surprised what can happen with a well worded email to the big boss
-
I've not signed any contract yet, I've not got any other cheaper provider lined up. Either way its looking like 30th but have escalated to a install area managers. What pissed me off is the notes on the systemstates emails have been sent but has anyone got back to me NO! I was on hold for40 minutes before install customer services answered. Getting fed up but a mate will writer an email for me to that Contact you gave me Jay. Not sure if chuff can pm our mutual friend to see if he can help. It takes me Half an hour just to type and wait until. A good 3G signal comes back.
-
done and am gutted for ya mate .
-
What i can do is check to see if there are any earlier appointments, I need some details which I've requeste through PM.
No point in calling up as you get an agent who can only do whats avaliable, you can of course like some one else said but that just make you out to be a pain and don't forget Virgin have the right to cancel your contract as well if it becomes abusive or they feel they will not add value to the business its a fine line.
I no longer work in customer service but will look, need to say no promises and anyone else looking to get Virgin PM me..
-
That's right I've never lost my temper especially at Indian call centers they do a job I,m only frustrated when 8days go by and no answers including customer services are trying hard to get them aswell. Something is wrong but I,m patient enough to see how this pans out. Tbh there is a principle at stake regardless of outcome with this one its just life it either goes your way or not lol thanks for all the help people so many missed posts
-
After months of thinking 4MB was all I could get.. I found out I can get 50MB though Virgin. Obviously the first place I do a search it the fountain of knowledge that is the GolfGTI forum and find this!!
Given an install date of the 6th Jan and told to arrrange cancellation of o2 for 7th of Jan. Think i may just leave it until my Virgin is up and running now.
Hope you get it all sorted... certainly dont put you through to an indian call centre when you want sales and to sign up

Well today is V day and rang home from west country to find out whats been going on?
So the new contract states I'm only getting one Tivo box and a second standard V box HD?
I'm sure I was told I would get TWO TIVO boxes which I wanted TWO 1TB boxes due to the debuncle thats gone on!
ME: So who is your whos your boss?
install enginner: TBH mate I don't know.... I was sent here to deal with this issue of yours.
ME: So what about my equipment?
Install Engineer: I just do the Job sheet mate thats it! one Tivo one V box.
ME: Do you speak with any supervisors or higher ups?
Install Engineer: Errrr No mate.
At that stage just got off the phone and rang upper management.
ME: Ring ring ring r ing ing.......
Sales: DONT PICK IT UP I RECOGNISE THE NUMBER!
Me: So miss why has the contract changed I thought we discussed this a week ago that we would get some incentives for the grief? I've spoken to sales they said they would do something aswell?
Upper management: Its okay anything they have done we can sort out at a later date to suit you.
ME:So me ringing sales and your goodself has done nothing to confirm the install equipement promised?
Upper management:I was put in charge of the install only and cabling!
Me: okay it must be sales fault for not comunicating with your good self?
Upper management: Yes its there fault they have not made me aware correctly!
ME: so me ringing a week before christmas to confirm everything was a waste of time?
Upper management: I email them to confirm the changes and hopefully get it changed for you?
Me: Well I thought this was going to be smooth as you take ownership of this issue? Plus a second visit from more engineers are coming out to rectify the issues this time around that I tried to fix with both your good self and sales before install came around?
Me: Okay I'm a million miles away from home and I'll leave it in your capable hands as I wont be back until the 4th. Bye!
Happy Christmas EVERYONE! & a good new year! :lipsrsealed:

What a hassle! Good luck with getting it all sorted.
I'm with BT Infinity, which is great. Not a fan of the traffic shaping though. I work for a company who supply through Digital Region, which is FTTC through South Yorkshire. It's pretty good! We see some amazing speed increases.
Anyone that has problems with their speed, please call up your provider and let them know rather than thinking this is just how it is. They can fiddle with various line profiles to get something that works well for you. You may notice an overall drop in speed by a few mb, but it may mean it's more stable and consistent :)
-
Bet your glad I recommended then now jay :lipsrsealed:

Ps. Sorry mate

Nahh Chuff its a simple day in life of Jay LOL!
The funny bit waas the install engineer he knew I was pissed just trying to explain where the cables should go via a bad reception phone 300 miles away!
Did you get two tivo boxes or was it one and a V box HD chuff? I swear the contract said two Tivo boxes? At this point I'm struggling whats been done TBH the chief excutives are involved and Richard Branson said he would ring me to invite me to his TAX free island for next Xmas  :lipsrsealed:
I'm on the inlaws tinternet 4mb but hey no vodaphone signal down here since 20th December they get me here aswell those techie gremlins. I topped up £20 on the wifes Pay as you go its a talk mobile sim card and guess what it uses Vodaphone network I was told after I paid customer service the £20
Its all good down here in west country!
Hope you had a good one aswell mate
Quick update LOL
Hello I have just recieved a phone call that the install engineers could not place the master junction box where I wished. Reasons apprently they thought my very strong expensive GRP roof was unsafe? Well I have had scoffolding weighing over 100 kg on that flat roof so an explanation as why they have drilled a hole in the middle of the living room where the children sit to watch TV and the telephone will require extention leads to remove that current location of the middle of my living room? :lipsrsealed:
-
my deal was before Tivo boxes Jay.
I got one HD+ box and one standard HD box.
-
One TiVo and one hd box, that's the tv deal
-
Thanks for clearing that up guys!
I'm back home and just hooked up the router I'm getting about 36Mps upload 2.5Mps thats not too shabby?
Well I'm still talking to management and they did drill the two holes in the side of the house and not the back easiest job route for them so not sure what to say, but hey I'm back online thanks fo0r hearing my grumbles :lipsrsealed:
Jay
-
about time, Tv working ok too ?
-
Hey Chuff happy New year, yeah the old man who was looking after the house for me has been watching TV the only issue is there was no HDMI to DVI cable apprently they didn't have one, but I asked for it via customer services.....
So its not the best picture its on the lowest quality setting, good but not clear.
I'll pop down to the shops tomorrow and buy one and see if I can get 720i off it at least.
The Super V hub was fine after a quick unplug, but can't get the kids wireless to pick up a strong signal from the hub. Our kids gone to bed so I'll have to muck about with it later.
The Phone has picked up the signal so it does work.
I might try 5Ghz and see if its better, otherwise I might need to try a secondary router and bridge the network.
A bit tired after 5 hours of travel
-
clipperjay,
could you keep us posted on the signal strength issue please. This is the reason I am leaving o2 for virgin. Last few years have been problem free internet and suddenly they say the signal drop out is due to "environmental issues" and cannot be fixed.
Obviously this is an issue as I do not really want to move the location of my desk, so was hoping the virgin router had a slightly better range :undecided:
-
Yes mate I'll try and see if the lads wireless is working today!
He only has a 35Mps wireless card from Netgear so I think its the issue here with his the card is old and TBH a new wireless USB dongle would be much better for signal strength. I'll report back soon as I config it.
-
Quick update:
Got a call from customer services this evening they are upgrading the V box to a Tivo for me and coming back to lay conduit on the cable outside the house as the hedge trimmer will cut the cable to pieces without it.
On another note the Netgear wireless card (35Mps) is still having issues and the Cisco USB Dongle (more up to date just bought one 135Mps) is struggling aswell.
The laptops and phones can get a signal fine through wireless router, but it seems to some sort of interference in the kids bedroom itself that’s cutting the signal strength?
We are moving the computer closer to the door to see if it helps, but I think running a solid Ethernet cable directly from hub to comp might be better?
The HDMI cable to DVI (just bought it) works a treat managed to split the sound from the scart and have now a 720P than scart

Considering this for the xbox in the sitting room. Easy enough to set up yourself? Or does it need to be professionally installed?
