Title: 1.8T AGU Poor acceleration / hesitant - 00515 Fault
Post by: Simpson GTI on 08 December 2011, 14:20

Recently I've had a problem where my 99 GTI AGU has been sluggish on acceleration. It idles smoothly and revs cleanly from stationary, but just feels sluggish through the revs and slightly hesitant (almost stop / start) when driving.  :embarassed:

On running a diagnostic check the code 00515 comes up which seems to relate to one of two Cam Hall Sensor G40 errors. If i clear the code with the ignition off then it doesnt return until the engine is started, but with the engine running it returns straight away.

When starting the engine, it takes a moment or two longer to start, hot or cold, whereas before it just started on the button. Could a faulty sensor cause this symptom?

It's had a recent oil change and i've cleaned the MAF with alcohol and that's throwing up no codes. Also fuel consumption seems ok.

I changed the CAM Position Sensor albeit for another used item which seemed to fix the problem for a day or so even though the code never went away. The wiring loom to the sensor looks ok and am getting voltage down the wires.

Anyone with any ideas before i buy a new sensor or take it to a garage?

Cheers

if its not the sensor or a wiring issue, it could be that your cam timing chain has stretched/skipped or an ECU fault.

Usually the ignition needs to be on to read and clear codes. So if you've still got the same code, try again with the ignition on.

Thanks for the info, i'll get wiring checked first and then look at timing etc.

Just to update in case anyone else experiences this problem, buying a brand new Camshaft sensor fixed this straight away. The car starts fine and pulls strongly. Cheers
