Sounds like the relay needs replacing.

Nice simple job, but I'm sure someone else with a bit more know how will tell you which relay it is!  :embarassed:

If your car is Volkswagen Golf  Mk 2 Petrol (Mar 84 - Feb 92) A to J then yes thats the right one!  You haven't said so i thought i had better check..... I have that one and i would say....

Get a bentley manual, loads better. Its american so its the wrong hand drive and some of the model names are odd but the mechanics are the same and its got a lot more details. They haynes does get a bit of stick on here, and rightly so i say!!

Its an '87 Golf Gti Mk2 1.8.  I asked the guy if that was the one and he was like no, it doesnt have gti on the back ... so i guess it is then ... sigh :|

I will look for the one you mentioned - cheers d00d!

ok ... so i got the relay here...

looking at this diagram:
http://volkswagen.msk.ru/vw_doc/eva2/EE01/ch13.5.html

its meant to be placed in the no7 slot .. however this slot is empty on me car .... huh  :undecided:

shall i just stick it in and see what happens ? Thought i had it sorted .. only cost me £2 too !

hmm slight update, heres a pic:
http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~naut2k3/Image(538).jpg compare that to this:

http://volkswagen.msk.ru/vw_doc/eva2/EE01/ch13.1.html

do we have a winner .... anyone got a same make/model car can confirm ?

sorry to keep going on but i am hoping someone has had a similar problem ...

i just changed it as above ... no12 was the culprit .... old one looks nice and orange in colour on the contacts ... place the new one in and there is major quick ticking when i dont indicate ... when i do indicate it works .. but then im not gonna be indicating all the time - had this sound on sunday when the relay broke :|

Any ideas guys ?

This might sound really obvious, but have you checked the fuse and the bulbs rather than the relay ?  :undecided:

bulbs were fine ... will check fuses tomorrow and let you know!

Another thing to check, this happened to mine the other week where the indicator light on the dash was flashing really quickly and the indicator itself wasnt flashing on the left hand side, you will need an electrical tester, but I traced it back to one of the wires being loose going into one of the plugs, this may be different to yours as you are having problems with both rather than one but might be worth checking out if it isn't the fuse.  :undecided:

Mine was intermittent too, I reckon you've got a loose connection somewhere.
