Hi all, I have started to have a couple of electrical problems arise on my beloved Golf:
1. My driver side electric window is playing up. It will lower but then hardly raise or I have to assist with my hand. The other side works fine.
2. My battery has started draining. I've popped the bonnet and can't find any loose wires. The only electrical work I've had done recently is new fog lights fitted a couple of weeks ago and I had new head unit and amp fitted about 6 weeks ago.
Anyone got any ideas as it's starting to do my head in. I'm not much into electricary and to be honest haven't a clue of what I should be looking for.

window normall problem mine dose it just the runner has worn. power loss check the alternator lose belt ?

Motor could be on its way out - it can be taken out & clean the motor brushes & grease the drive...
2. My battery has started draining. I've popped the bonnet and can't find any loose wires. The only electrical work I've had done recently is new fog lights fitted a couple of weeks ago and I had new head unit and amp fitted about 6 weeks ago.
How old is your battery? Does the Amp only power up when the head unit is switched on???
Get a multimeter and check the alternator power output should be around 14V...
Again could be simple as the volt reg or knackered battery... Batteries take a hammering at this time of year and a low powered one will show its age when you pop all the electrics on the drive home.. (Lights, blower, rear screen, stereo, amp wipers etc etc)....

More than likely the window problem is going to be motor/wire/regulator related.
After many many years of abuse, metal filings from the cable become mixed with the gunk in the motor guide and foul it up. Hence the slow upward movement (gravity assists it going down)
Remove the regulator mech from the door and check that the cable is in one piece. Then open up the face plate on the motor. You will see the spool that the cable is wound around. You can remove this, unwind the cable (remove if necessary) and give it a good clean. Have a look at the gears/worm drive to see that they have not worn.
Lube and replace, and it should work as normal.
With the battery. Whip out the voltage regulator from the Alternator. Check that the two brushes are not excessively worn. If so, replace. About £15 from GSF etc...
As per normal, check all your earth straps are connected and clean, and and the battery terminals and cables from it are clean.

Well electric window sorted. After reading through various VW forums I thought I would try the silicone lubricant spray option. HEY PRESTO!! All working again. Looks like the rubbers in the runners up the sides were gripping the glass. Warm fuzzy feeling again :grin:. Just got my battery drain problem to sort now. Got a veh electrician coming on Friday to have a look.

Electrics now solved. Quite a strange one actually. Veh electrician came round and asked about history of what had been happening and history of electrical work completed. I gave him all the details and history of electrical work. I mentioned something that I had noticed over the past week, and that was that sometimes when I removed ignition key the stereo wouldn't switch off. I would either have to switch off manually or stick key in and withdraw again. Well it turns out that there is a micro switch in the ignition barrel that disengages power to stereo when you pull out keys. he showed that the microswitch was intermitantly sticking and that was probably the problem. He explained that it was so sensitive just touching the ignition barrel would switch stereo on and off and that it could be happening while I have car parked up and so draining the battery. He pulled out stereo and and wiring is now set so that I physically have to switch the stereo on and off. He also fitted a headlight buzzer so I don't leave lights on. Now a happy man. Just got the engine to decide on now.

ANYONE! need assistance! Ok basically...all bulbs are ok, headlights work...when i switch the lights on (1st click) i get the below;
NO LIGHTS anywhere...no rear...no dims on the front...no dash, dial and interior lights!
BUT when i switch the lights on full (2nd click) my headlights are working...only lights that do work!
I've changed the switch...wiring loom and checked the fuses...need to check the relay but im sure its not that...can anyone think of anything?

Have you fitted the correct switch?? 9 or 11 Pin??
Check the earth's etc...

did the same thing with the old switch too...changed the wiring loom...still made no difference!
