Title: Heavy clutch, is this normal?
Post by: the_GTI_new_guy on 08 May 2005, 18:44
Hi guys. Just got myself my 1st mark 2 golf. Its a 16V GTI 1991. I part exed my mark 3 golf gti 8V against it. Anyway, i know the clutches are heavier than the mk3 but how much is normal? It works fine but just seems suprisingly heavy. I presume it must be a cable operated clucth and npt hydrolic so i have no idea how heavy it should be.

Thanks in advance.

I can only say that since i had a clutch fitted in mine recently its soooo much lighter and obviously so from b4. might be in need of doin or on its way out try the linkage at the end of the cable first spray loads of lube on there that may be seizing up. The lad who did my clutch did that @ the time he fitted it. just a thought

Heavy clutch pedal = worn clutch pressure plate

thats if the cable isn't knackered

Maybe this heavy cluctch is why the car was sold by the last owner. They had it for 14 years. Will have to look into the linkage and such and see. Might just pop it into my local German car specialist. If anyone is near Lakeside its called "Motorvation" Fantastic service given everytime. Took my mk3 golf in as the idle was dropping dangerously low after high revs. They ran the diagnostic computer, found nothing and said no need to pay as nothing is wrong. (I was expecting the £45 diagnostic bill, RESULT) The chap there said it would be the throttle body clogged (1998 model with 108K on the clock) charged for 45 minutes labour (£30) and said forget the VAT. Car worked to perfection until i sold it. A cheap fix at a garage with honest service, that RARE. They got my custom 4 life.

16vs have always had heavy clutches. I know i got caught in a 5 hour jam leaving London once, creeping forward for hours upon hours and almost couldnt walk at the end of the ordeal.

mk2 16v's do not have heavy clutches, that is total bollox.
Pete's mk2 16v, which we changed the gearbox/clutch and cable is VERY light. This is how it is supposed to be.
The hydraulic clutch on the mk3 vr6 is much heavier, obviously because it is has a 228mm clutch, and has a much stronger pressure plate.

cant agree. my valver was 4 when i got it and its always been heavy. i also test drove one of the last ones in 91 and it was equally heavy. i also drove a friends 16v all those years ago and found it exactly the same. i must of driven three duds.

Did you drive one with a brand new clutch and cable fitted?
Its certainly very light compared with the vr6

strange, i test drove a VR6 just after they came out (revenge for the dealership charging £5 to refill the windscreen res during a service on the 16v).

the vr6 had a much much lighter clutch.

A few thing to consider :
1: The clutch can feel heavy if the cable has worn ( over time )through the nylon inner casing .
2: If the clutch is VERY heavy it can break the quadrant in the end of the gear box ( behind the green circular plate on the end... quite easy to replace )
3; In extreme circumstances the center release shaft/rod ( which slides inside the input shaft ) can punch a hole through the center release plate in the clutch assembly ( I have seen a few that have done this ) . This makes it a right bu66er to get the box out as the release rod tends to get stuck  and you  can end up bending the rod and knackering the small oil seal and bronze bush in the end of the inputshaft.
N.B. I would always recomend replacing the oil seal and bush when replacing the clutch assembly ( a small price to pay compared with replacing ( an oil contaminated  ) plate a few days later !!!

Replace the cable before you do anything else. Get yourself down to Halfords the manual cables are on clearance, I got one yesterday for £5!! :D

Edit: The clutch on my MK2 driver was quite heavy, but not too bad.  I fitted the clutch spring from a MK2 16v and it was better.  I also replaced the cable and it was much lighter for a while, but gradually went back to normal (non genuine cable from GSF)

ive had a few gti's and all the clutches seem to be lighter than newer cars

someone was telling me that a heavy clutch could be related to the release fork/bearing. is this true ?

i used to think my clutch was light and it is compared to marks 16v but then i had a new clutch fitted. but the other day i drove an audi a3 brand new and damn the clutch weas like a button made me realise how old our cars are getting.........

and it had weird adaptive steering bollies

Where should the bite ing pount be. Mine is 1/2 to 3/4 way up. Works fine just wondered if this is the norm.

yea thats fine if it is really high or really low then clutch is either excessively worn or incorreclty adjusted
