Hi Guys,
My Mk3 is is on it's way out and I placed a low bid on this car:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120817901897?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120817901897?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649)
Key points:
- 180000 Miles
- 1991 Reg
- MOT until Sept 2012
- Cat D (Screw drived lock but VOSA cleared
Won it for £750 and to be honest thought it would go for much more so caught me off guard a bit so doing all research as fast as possible. My only concern is it is a cat D apparently from someone screwdriving the door, however the owner states that an engineers report was given by the ministry of transport (VOSA) that he has.
First question is there any way of checking what the CAT D was given for? Would an ebay status report be enough?
Secondly is this a reasonable price or have I paid over the odds given the info?
Thanks Guys

TBH & IMO - Cat D - means nothing....
When your fed up with it or it fails MOT etc - Break her and you'll get more than your money back in parts...
I wouldn't worry about that - I would be more worried about rust (if there is any) and that scratch...
Price wise I would say it's a very fair price -SUBJECT to it's condition...
I just bought the wife the exact same car, less mileage and longer tax and with alloys for £1K (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=211010.0 )

looks like a nice car, Cat D or not, who cares for that sort of money, just enjoy it...
Repair costs would have been sky high, and not something that an insurance company would want to get involved in repairing, especially if a new door shell was NLA at the time... previous owners, would have been likely to have received a very good deal on the claim, they either bought the car back, or let it go to a salvage dealer... who possibly nabbed the OE wheels, hence the G60s

Ah I am filled with confidence. Thanks guys
I asked loads of questions but unfortunately after the auction so think he is bit peeved lol. I didn't think it'd sell for that TBH...
I have had a quote for insurance (Im 27, 5 YNC , 3rdPFT etc) and came out about £460. This sound fair? Any advice on known good insurers for my status?
I will read up on the great buyers guides listed on this forum but are there any sharp common pointers I need to look out for on these?
Thanks

Sound a good price to me... some peeps go for a classic insurance but you have to manage very low mileage..

See above answer...
But its a bit late now to argue the point when picking it up...
Lots of stuff to look at fixing as there is never a 100% sorted car for that money...
BUT That's the fun of owing a 20 year old classic!!!
-
Insurance-wise, if it's on a '91 plate then can you get classic insurance on it, or would the mileage restriction be an issue?
My MK2 is on a classic policy for about £200 a year, but I have another daily driver (which is usually a requirement) and there's some restriction on how many miles I can do etc (4k-ish).

180K

I'm 38, 1 YNC (other vehicles are company owned and insured), full comp (which is only 70 more than 3pft) and I pay £580. But that is because my wife although no points and has had her license for nearly 20 years - is classified as having her license for one year (her 20 year license is Oz, and she didnt want to swap it as it is a real pain to get an Oz license) so she sat the Uk test and passed here; so she has two licenses but the insurance companies wont let that count as a 20 year license.
-
460 seems a little steep at your 27. im 21, 4year NCB and i got mine for £600 fire+theft and all my mods declared with admiral of all companies . . .
-
My mk2 valver was £157 fc
But I am old
-
Heritage quoted over £1700
Best I can find is gocompare via admiral £460
Sky Insurance was £490 and I have to get cat 2 alarm
Any advice guys? I have no convictions, no accidents, 28 years old, driving 8 years, 5 years NCB, have another insured vehicle campervan, and I do under 4000 miles a year. Only after TPFT.
Should be cheaper no?
-
Surely a classic policy would come up cheaper? I'm a couple of years older than you are, but everything else checks out the same - unless you live in a war zone, I can't understand it. Maybe for some reason your car is not showing up as >20 years old yet and not clocking as eligible for classic insurance? That's all I can think!
-
Have you had a quote for fully comp? Oddly, it can be cheaper as statisicly, people who ask for fully comp are seen to be a lower risk. A low risk named driver added will help too. Wife, Girlfriend, Parents?
Also, try a classic policy. My renewal for my 16V came through from HIC at £129.00. At that price, I'm not even going to bother shopping round.

Good news, Heratiage called and quoted £420
Bad news.. Seller messaged saying "The item is no longer available" after I fing won the auction, sent 4 messages talkign with him about the car and me arranging insurance and cash today. Then an hour ago got that message. I am so out of pocket now.
He is going to pay one way or another

twit.... Leave him Neg Feedback...
Maybe the cars not as good as he made out and you scared him off with your questions...
Might be a good thing in the end!!

You've been Gazumped! car is worth twice what it reached all day long, and if its that good possibly more. just have to wait to see if it resurfaces somewhere else :lipsrsealed:

Lame!
That kind of trick gets pulled every now and then on eBay unfortunately. I've bought and sold a few cars on eBay over the years, and have never once let the auction run to term. Have always either turned up with the cash and made an offer if I liked the car, or had someone do the same to me and then pulled the auction.
Better luck next time :)
-
You would be VERY lucky to get £750 in parts for it but at that price - Enjoy it if he lets it go to you.

Is it just my eyes or does that have G60 arches on the front???
And it has the nicer Rainbow Interior & Run Out/16V Rear Lights....
Pity about the speaker covers - Why do people do that???

Isn't this a run-out model on a H-plate? Looks like my valver - only mine is more original ;)

If it was an 8V with that equipment it would be a Run Out - but its a 16V so std spec...
