Title: Job interview - **Update - Going well so far!**
Post by: Horney on 30 November 2011, 07:43
Got one this morning @ 10am. It's for an internal vacancy where I am at the moment. If I got it it would result in a considerable pay rise and a car allowance combined with a shed load more responsibility and stress. A bit nervous and it doesn't help I'm being interviewed by the new HR director who I met for the first time last week when I nearly ran her over in the car park!

Not sure that'll work as she's double teaming the interview with our Service Director. Maybe I should try seducing him as well?

Good luck nick, what's the new job role?
Title: Re: Job interview
Post by: Horney on 30 November 2011, 08:32
Cheers guys.

The role is to be one of our Service Managers. Essentially I would get a group of customers and be their first point of contact for any non technical issues, be in charge of contract changes, keeping them sweet, keeping them as our customers, doing reviews, spotting opertunities for us to sell them more services, etc etc.

Cheers guys, I think it went pretty well and I should find out later this week, early next.

If I get it then it's car shopping time!

Hope you get it mate.
Car allowance would be sweet, then you can keep the Mazda for fine days and the GTI for the track. Oh and get a diesel company car that could tow the Golf on a trailer ;)

I've also got an interview tomorrow. Like you it's internal for a more senior role, more responsibility, more paperwork, but better hours and more pay. The only thing is it's not permanent, it's 9 months covering for someone who's working on a project. Though it would be good experience and could lead to a permanent job and if not, I just go back to my old one.

Good luck to you Nick.

Good luck to you too then! Being able to prove yourself, even in a temporary role, is always good.

The plan would certainly be to pick up something big, derv and good for toeing the golf!

Remember that if you get a monthly car allowance, its treated as salary, so don't forget that tax and NI comes off that as well.

p per mile is only good if you do lots and lots if miles.

Title: Re: Job interview
Post by: Horney on 30 November 2011, 13:38
Cheers Elvi, I was aware of that. I don't think there's any rules on what car I would have to have though so I would plan on something like a 2005/6 Passat estate and pocket the cash each month.

Chatting to the other Service Managers they do about 500-1000 business miles a month.

question is... how many cars does one need?

As many as I can afford. Might have to look into renting a unit/workshop!

That isn't strictly true, it also depends on the company. I.E. I went down to telford for a meeting yesterday so ~210 miles. Company Pay 45p per mile = £95.

I only used 1/3 of a tank of diesel and to fill it costs ~£80.

Glad it went well... fingers crossed.

If your company doesn't have rules about the car then I would be very surprised.  I have a company car, I also have the option to opt out and take allowance.  The conditions for doing this were so strict it wasn't worth the bother.   Car can never be more than 4 years old at any time and when it is you have to replace it, expensive business insurance that you have pay for out of your allowance to enable you to drive to various places of work blah blah blah....

And as Elvi pointed out, TAX, it  can be a biatch...  I get taxed on another 7k a year! (half of that is down to a fuel card)

Well the Service managers currently drive:

Paula: 58 Plate A3 TDi 5 door.
Lisa: 54 Plate Jag X-type Saloon
Matt: 59 Plate Seat Leon Cupra R
Jason: 58 Plate Audi A4 Cab TDI S-Line

There's no company car scheme, just a monthly allowance. MD drives a 98 Volvo Estate complete with dents and scratches!

True.  But you have to take into account wear and tear, VED, maintenance, servicing etc.. on your own car.

Fine for one off trips, but not so good if its a regular thing for work.

If you opt out of a company car scheme and use your own car, you get the statutory pp mile, 45p iirc.

If Nick gets the monthly car allowance, he will fund his car from that, and iirc get something like 12p p mile for anything up to 2.0 Litre engines.

I only went and got it!

Well kinda. They have created a new role for me as I didn't have enough experience. So rather than a Service Manager I'm an Service Executive! Less pay and responsibility but after a year of proving myself I'll be promoted to Service Manager level. £5.5K Car allowance after completing my 2 month probation. Start 1st of Jan!

No, it gets lumped in with my salary. Once through my probation then I'll get hunting for a suitable set of wheels. Something Derv, estate and with enough towing allowance to pull the Golf on a trailer.

A bit of an update.

Been in the job for 2 weeks and it's going well so far. I'll be taking on my first proper account to manage in the coming weeks and it's Addison Lee. Only our biggest customer. Gulp!

On the up side Liam Griffin, the MD of Addison Lee, drives in the BTCC and we sponsor him. This means I should be getting some all expenses paid VIP BTCC access. Whoooop!!! Rumur has it that he's going to be running in one of the three MG6s in MG's return to BTCC this year. I think it's going to be announced tuesday.

Also I had a chat with our head of PR/Marketing and we're going to be doing at least one Palmersport day for our customers that I will get to go along to. Double whooooop!!!!!
