Title: Mk2 on ebay - worth the money?
Post by: shaolindan on 29 November 2011, 16:46
What do you think chaps?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-Pearl-Grey-VW-Golf-MK2-1-8-GTI-16V-J-reg-1991-/150692765507?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2315fd1f43#ht_2913wt_1095

Other than the ride height - although being in London it makes sense... I think it looks great. That interior is unreal.

Worth the asking?

Looks a nice car but you would need to see it up close for that money....

Love this comment - And, most importantly, the headlining has NOT sagged!  First time I have ever seen a MK2 with a complete headlining! (I have 5 MK2's cars on the drive and not one of them is sagging) also if you look at the sunroof picture it is beginning to sag...

Genuine blue G11 coolant - Should have used G12 Pink....

Not sure about this; STUNNING and completely original

then why fit these:
- Ashley competition 4-1 high flow tuned exhaust manifold
- Ashley competition 2 1/4" tuned 3 box exhaust system with 3" twin outlet (looks lovely, sounds INCREDIBLE with notable performance gains)
- Various stainless steel nuts and bolts
- Vibratechnics fast road gearbox mount
- Venair blue silicone water hoses and hose clips
- Head-gasket replacement with Elring 2.0 16v ABF steel multi-layer steel unit (will never need doing again, original was leaking externally, NOT internally)
- Elring headbolts
- Elring gasket kit (camcover, inlet manifold, exhaust manifold)

This would bother me for a car costing so much...

- The only rust on this car is on the lower section of the passenger door; I have rubbed these festered stone chips down and rust killed them - just festered stone chips, no more
- Surface rust around fuel cap under the flap; again, I have rust killed this, and it's purely surface and very small at that!
- Small bubbling around scuttle wiper (very common and very very minor)

It is funny when an add goes on about originality, following a list of modified parts!

Its not worth the money, which is why it says make me an offer at the top of the add. Good for a phone call and a look see though. If its well sorted, and needs nothing done, then its worth most of that to some.

No.

What's the golden rule?

Buy on bodywork.

Too much rust for that money.

Why do people rarely put their rear seat belts tidy when taking a picture of the rear seat?

I always say buy on bodywork.

check the fuel cap area, bottoms of doors, and rear strut areas. Another favorite is the back panel where it joins the boot floor (near the spec sticker)

I'd personaly buy a cheaper one and throw it to a bodyshop

Edit: The price is not that bad.

I think its 1500/1700 overpriced...

It'll need a trip to the body shop and may need a new door, skutle & depending on how bad the fuel filler is when you strip it back a bit of welding.... also depends how bad it is on the inside of the filler - and then you might have a nice car when you put all the rest back to OEM.....

There was a stunning BBM with UV Recaro's on ED38 for 2K more and that I would rather own than this Ebay one...

OP... If the scuttle panel is starting to let go, then you can rest assured that the rear arches will be shot, under those plastic arches! Description also claims never welded underneath, I have seen mk2s that are solid on the floor pan, but shot everywhere else, worth a view though, could be a gem, wouldnt worry about the price, everything is negotiable
