Title: Retro Fit DAB
Post by: jdjd on 28 November 2011, 17:39
According to the SPEC sheet from VW car had DAB, turns out it doesn't. Had it in my GTI and would like it again. Is this easy to fit? Or does it need a whole new headunit and cables running?
Any idea of the price / where it can be done thanks

its built into the head unit unfortunately

i love my DAB which is why I'm not keen on upgrading to the RNS510.

RNS510 is the SAT NAV unit which doesn't come with DAB and can't have it.

RCD 510 has 3 buttons either side of the screen,
RNS 510 has 4 buttons either side of the screen and Sat Nav.

There was 3 versions of the RCD 510 unit

1: basic version
2: a DAB version (has a DAB button)
3:a rear view camera version. (has the socket on the back)

Retrofit is probably a pain as theres a connection on the rear window eliment for it (not sure if its a diffferent window in that case) and wiring to fit.

It's a touch screen with no sat nav so must be an RCD 510, as Snoopy says. Does it have a DAB button (top rhs button) , do you have a rear camera or rear parking sensors (OPS).  Is this the original radio unit??

You may have the DAB wiring already in the car!?

I too would have liked DAB, but have a reversing camera RCD510 unit instead. My hope is that VW will at some point release a unit that handles both camera and DAB (maybe even a Nav equipped one). In the meantime there are these two options...

I'm not going for it because (a) £400 for the first one is just too much to hear Radio 5 a bit clearer and have access to Talksport, and (b) in my limited experience of aftermarket upgrades to the VW oem system (Fiscon bt, Audison amps & speakers, Bitone), the chance of it turning out to be a real PITA is high.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that, come the Mk7, VW will have an oem answer that still fits our dashboard. And Mortygt140 gets hold of some!
