No change in performance (was driving in a 30mph zone on the way home)
Car's got 46,000-odd (iirc!) and has just been serviced (standard filters, plugs & oil change)
car is manual, standard trim/spec
Any thoughts?

Just had to replace my battery on my 05 model. Get it checked out.

Will do - thanks.
Also had a response stating that it could be a slipping Aux belt....
a couple of things to look at :)

Does it start up fine (i.e doesn't struggle)?

Hi Alan,
No, the car starts fine and tbh, it hasn't happened again.
My guess IS the early signs of a slipping alternator belt..... I draw this conclusion as when the Cambelt was done at time of purchase, despite my requesting that the associated belts and water pump be done, my best guess is that they weren't (it was bought from a VW dealership, after all! )
Does this sound plausible? It'll give me something to do over the next few weeks !

If its starting fine and hasn't happened again I wouldn't worry. By all means get your hands dirty and have a butchers.
Iv replaced my battery on my MY05 GTI as it was totally knackered.

Thanks for the reply, and advice
