Title: Quick advice required on whether main dealer has used correct oil grade

Hi

My 2005 MK5 GTI just had a minor service at a VAG main dealer.It's just come up to 90,000 miles on the clock and has a full VW service history. It's on the Time and Distance service schedule.

I had the Fixed Price minor service, which is basically just an oil change and inspection, for 129 pounds. However, I have a question regarding the oil used.

I understand from the links here http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,558.0.html that from about 2-3 years ago there has been a directive to all main VAG dealers that they must use Long Life Engine oil for all engines made after 2001. I understand the LLW oil is fully synthetic.

The part number for the oil used on my invoice is:

 VZGB 115 QLB 00 40 SYNTA5L

I wondered whether anyone knows whether this is semi-synthetic or fully synthetic oil. I would check with the dealership however it's closed for the day.

there might be a directive, but unless you ask for it, you have to pay extra for it, the 3 dealers I've used over the past 5 years have never automatically offered fully synthetic oil, always semi synthetic. normally pay an extra £10 and get the fully synthetic oil.

so your dealer isnt in the wrong as such, but then I could be wrong, discuss...

Thanks. Yes that makes sense as they would be unlikely to offer the better deal unless asked. However, as I need to get a slightly leaking oil filter housing fixed, I'll ask for the oil to be changed to fully synthetic then. I'll be doing that at a specialist rather than VAG though! At least i've got this year's  'stamp'  in the book.

fully synthetic 5w30 should always be used, think its 505.01 spec?

I've had it a couple of times when dealers have put one thing on the invoice but then when queried they confirmed the Castrol EDGE 5w30 fully synthetic (Longlife) was used (i'm on T&D servicing)
