Im, after a cheap van.. and i say cheap.. i mean around 500 - 700 max
i really wanted a late Escort TD 1.8.. yeah i know its a ford but they are a good work horse and cheap and it has turbo..
But also interested in the Polo caddy van (around the P reg shape) or those polo pick up trucks (or even skoda version)
will be used to lug car bits around and for me to use throughout the winter as my Golf is just not gonna be any good in the snow with its new found power upgrade
what do people think of all these?
-
Escort van mate, cheap to run and fix if anything goes wrong mechanically or any dings in the ice
-
yeah I'm thinking same, ben wants me to go down VW route, but if i did this i would be just buying for the badge...
-
Buy a Caddy dick head
-
Cheap mk3 TDI Mr
Then you can get your baby over to carbon chip for the winter
-
Get a Skoda / VW pickup :afro:

1.9d and 2.0 Sdi wouldn't pull the d1ck of a chocolate mouse.

Ford stands for
fix or repair daily
vw all the way

This, or Mk3 Van. You will get one of them for sub 500 notes too.
This has now got my mind running wild!
Mk3 estate with the windows taken out and some panels welded in, Back stripped out and some chipboard thrown in, 40mm lowering springs and some decent rims and you have a proper cool work van. You can do that all that for your budget as well I reckon!
-
You need one of these :smug:

rot box ford or rot box early caddy for your budget, good luck
-
What would be really cool is a Mk 1 Escort van!
-
last year i had a skoda pick up. really liked it. 1.3 cheap to run but slow. sadly it was rear ended and written off. only real complaint is you cant park anywhere with stuff in the back.

currently have a 1.9 sdi caddy van. it is reasonable good on fuel (90 miles to a tenner if you drive steady). it isnt fast by any stretch of the imagination but it is a van at the end of the day. the tdi's fetcha premium. i am happy with the performance, although when fully loaded i long for a turbo on the hills. it happily trundles along the motorway at 70 though.
for the size of the vehicle they are rather spacious - i had 23 wheels with tyres in it the other night (only for storage purposes mind)

Iv seen some turbo derv escorts with a years MOT going for circa 700.. I think that's pretty good going
As chuff mentions I'm aware of the rust issues on that era caddy and also the fords..
I love the mk3 van idea tho ;-) what engines are in these ? I really want a turbo if I'm honest
Doc I need to get F17BAD over to u ASAP really, so yea soon as I sort this we can do that if u guys are free? I'll call u anyhow to sort :-)
You can't map a escort turbo derv can u?

i find the partner annopying to drive. i get really sore shoulders and neck after about an hour and find the light/indicator switches really really sensitive.
horrible compared to the caddy
-
as if by magic.. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=213584.0
i had one for a while (with a popemobile stylee box on the back) it was ace. 100 miles to a tenner of diesel and was a laugh flat stick in the lanes.
-
Golf van is a 1.9d slow but does over 50mpg
Seen turbo ones but not sure if they were from factory like that. Engine swap should be easy enough

from what he told, Interesting, frightening and entertaining all rolled into one
-
hahaha i dont now if thats a good thing or bad
does not need to be fast tbh.. as i have the Golf for that.. but i don't won't owt thats gonna be hell on the up hills... like my old runner was (mk5 escort 1.3 )
The Escort Vans iv seen have a Turbo.. 1.8TD so i think they would perform ok.
im picking up a D reg 1986 MK1 caddy on Tuesday.. not mine.. but this is having a new heart....more on that later tho :lipsrsealed:
i do like caddys. would i be able to easily load a engine on one do you think ?
gonna prob buy something in december, it needs to get me through winter as F17BAD will not perform in the snow (wheel spin city) and it also needs to see ben through when we convert his car as that will be off the road
it also needs to see us right with our conversion jobs.. need at least a years trouble free from it.. as i say iv seen Escorts with a year ticket and a turbo close to £700.. and around 1998 - 2001 years

why will your car not work in the snow?

why will your car not work in the snow?
i already said didn't i ? LOL
its bad enough in the rain.. too much power at the front wheels.. Snow and ICE is going to a pointless nightmare.. I'm all for using the car all year round. I always do. its a true daily driver but i just think it will be difficult to say the least with its new found power hike

dont but an escort van. they are turds had one for 6 months in 2005 and it was rotten as a pear and it only had 90k on when it had to be scrapped......it was 8 years old.
i was skint and had to get another van so got a seat inca on a p reg when i got it it had 198k on it for 400 notes with a full ticket. it lasted 2 years before i was in a position to buy....a ford transit jumbo, which is still going. just.
the trannie has had a lot of money spent on it and its still a turd.
i sold the inca for 400 notes and its still buzzing around locally now, when sold it was on 240k miles, god knows what its on now!
sdis are bullet proof, slow but bullet proof. dont waste your money on a ford.
-
I had a MK5 escort as a runner tho mate, 250k miles that managed to do. never skipped a beat.. did rust away on the sills, was repairable but i replaced it with the black golf in my signature (was intended to be just a runner too)
Fords are not as bad as some like to think.... or is that just me going mad haha
-
I had an escort Van..... loved it! even saw one for sale last night when i walked past a garage up in Burnley, thought, ah, should tell Kells!
-
Just learn to drive her in the snow, cant be too hard. Keep her in high gears and get her some proper winter footware.

mate car is as low as a lawn mower on the front which is a challenge in itself.. id have to set off in 4th gear .. CBA with the hassle of it all
need something i don't need to give a f**k about
Escort is winning at the mo.. seen a few
-
I had an Seat Inca a few years ago that was pretty decent and reliable, basically a Caddy with VW badges.
-
What about a write off caddy 1.9 SDi? 52 plate got written off due to rear bumper and door, all fixed and someone smacked the arse again. Needs a rear bumper and a rear door but potentially talking MEGA cheap.

How much we talking mate
