Title: Insurance gave me a Maestro card with money on it.....
Post by: asif on 25 November 2011, 14:39
Right basically I want some of your thoughts and ideas on a situation i've got.

Basically my travel insurance company gave me a Maestro card with money on it to buy replacements of items lost on holiday, i asked for cash but they said they consider this as good as cash.

It has £1060 on the card and I want to somehow turn it into cash rather than be tied into spending it shops that take card, for one it doesn't work in all shops but to be fair it does in most high st shops. I can't useit for fuel as it get's declined :( Can't do cash back either :(

So any ideas of how I can somehow turn this money into cash?

This: done: displacement spending and you're laughing.

Or buy the stuff to replace what you had stolen, as that's what it's for...

Wanted to spend it on mods for my car, so wanted to free up the cash so I can buy stuff from people on forums and generally pay people in cash for things like when people are selling stuff in classifieds on all sites and also when you got people selling stuff that you know liek friends and whatever, it's just restrictive at the minute.

The replacements aren't things I really needed just things that went and luckily were covered, I wouldn;t miss the items even if I never had them so not worth replacing the items as I hardly used those items.

better I spend it on things I want than what I don;t need anymore.

I think this is why they give you a Maestro card.

Buy some foreign currency on the card then take the cash back and swap it for sterling for free. Granted you'll lose a bit on exchange rates but you'll have cash in your pocket.

I think this whole problem you have is the reason they gave you a card instead of cash in the first place

Use it to open an Isa.  Then buy some Tesco shares.

Warren Buffet is right most nearly all of the time.

Well they refused to give the cash, I tried to steer it so they gave me the cash but they said the card is the same as cash so i couldn't get them to send me a cheque instead.

Think they may have got a bit supicious when you asked for cash!
Bank transfer would have been easier for everyone!

BTW which insurance company is this?

A. Why did you have loads of stuff on holiday with you that you didnt want or need, that conveniently then got stolen

B. Have you comitted insurance fraud  :lipsrsealed:

C. Are committing a further offence by looking to launder the money through a friends account

lol I didn;t say cash as that would be chavvy and obvious also very stupid to think they were going to send me an envelope with £20 notes in it to the value of £1060 .

I was just asking for either cheque or bank transfer anything that would give me live cash that is not locked on a card.

All questions are understandable but each have a legit answer, if you still assume the worst of me then each to there own.
Answers are as follows:
a) I had mine and my wifes I-phones and a side bag in the claim, this totalled £1060. The phone didn't need to be replaced as I was due a free upgrade so if I went out and bought 2 new iphones and then upgraded I would've been left with 4 phones between 2 people which i don't need.

b) What gave you that idea? Just because I don;t want to buy replacements for the lost items, it automatically gives you the right to assume have broken the law, says alot about your own mentality and the way your brain works, god knows what you get upto.

c) This wouldn't be money laundering as the claim is totally legit. f I was paid by cheque and bought some alloys of you and didn;t replace my lost phones, would that be an offence? If I had to buy replacements the insurance company would've just sent me replacements as that would work out cheaper for them.

Anything else?
