i have a little dilemma
basically my flat mate let her boyfriend stay at our place for a couple of months over the summer as long as he paid for the electric/gas/water/phone bills that he used. so he owes me 70 odd quid because all the utility bills are in my name. they have now split up and my flat mate basically thinks that it isnt her problem anymore, and said ex boyfriend isnt answering his phone, blocked me on facebook and i have no new address for him.
am i right in thinking that i dont really have a leg to stand on if they dont pay me?
or is there someone official i can talk to?
-
tbh you have pritty much no chance of getting that back
-
It should be your flat mate's problem to cover the bill.
If not, find another flat mate.
-
fair one, though i do have his sofa bed here so might just be as much of a d*ck as him and sell it

Go for it, ebay
-
As above, get your flat mate to pay or kick her out! It's her responsibility to pay for her guests!
If she is fit, then get her to pay by kind!

Do it or small claimes court if you really want to be a bar steward?
(As long as you can prove that they owe you)

or ebay the sofa bed
-
fcuk it... ebay ftw
-
or burn the feckerrr................sofa bed that is

Hard situation, and I have sympathy for you. Get your flatmate to pay you back weekly, say £10 a week or get her ex to pay up.
My flat mates friends used to come stay for weeks at a time and he said they'll buy food, rent movies, pay their share of the phone bills and help out with elec/gas... problem was I worked long hours and only got home at 1:30am if I didn't miss the last train or it hadn't broke down so all the food had gone and they were usually fast a sleep in the living room so I couldn't watch the movies they rented, my weekly 'rent' which covered gas/elec/council tax and rent never changed either

This!
If she's being a dick about it, make it hell living with you. She will soon move out anyway. It will just end up with you hating each other and doing nothing for each other, and thats not a good place to be with a flat mate.
-
might be on gumtree by the end of the night - free ads and all that
-
and she met up with the ex boyfriend yesterday and gave half of his stuff back to him - what a joke!?
-
get some naked pics up of her.. I am sure we can all contribute to cover the £70. Either that or I am sure she will pay up to make sure they dont appear
-
haha god no! i wouldn't do that to you guys. shes got the figure of a saggy snowman
id be banned from the forum
-

Tell her its time to move on, and find another flat mate!!
-
i would do - but its a student tenancy agreement. although I'm the 'lead tenant' i have no real power or authority to do anything except make life miserable for her
-
Do that and make sure the next flat mate is a fit blonde with big tits
-
i have another awesome flatmate that more than makes up for the pain in the arse one
will be living with the mrs after i graduate the end of this year
-
Grow a pair and tell her to cough up, it's a joke if she thinks you should pay for more. Is it £70 each for you and her to cover her ex's share or just you?
-
the bills were split 5 ways between me, my 3 flat mates and her boyfriend ended up being 71.52 each
so at the moment ive paid 143.04
-
if it was me that sofa bed would already be on ebay, along with however much of her stuff it takes to make it up to £70
-
Your out of pocket 70 notes, but so are all your other mates? or is it that you covered his side of the rent for one month?
If its 3 of you out of pocket then f**k it, that 210 quid he owes you lot, clean him out... get the small claims court involved
-

Or if she isnt fit get her to clean the lag with her tongue
-
doubt court would be an option, unless in your contract it says subletting is ok.
contact the people you got the tenancy with.
tell the girl you expect 70 quid from her and by what date, if she doesn't play ball, get a payg simcard, text her pretending to be her ex, tell her that you've got hiv :lipsrsealed:
either that or get your mrs to move in for a month or so
-

Before you do this, let him know. It's not your property, and you can be done for selling stolen property.
Send a letter preferably, but any reasonable form of communication will do (that you can trace) giving him a reasonable amount of time to pay up, and let him know that the sofabed will be sold to cover his costs.
Covers you, and prevents future aggro.

No joke really, that usually happens after a breakup.
-

That's the sort of thing a 16 year old would come out with.

piss in her shampoo :lipsrsealed:

Sounds like a sensibel way to recoup something!
-
how do your other flat mates feel about the situation? she sounds like a bit of a c*nt, if they agree with you, tell her to pay up or f**k off. I'm sure all of you together could make her feel unwelcome enough
-
As a matter of interest how much did you pay out for the previous quarter bills?
Did they go up considerably with the extra person?
Have the other 3 permanent flatmates had a result?

.
How can he send him a letter when he dont know where he lives otherwise he would be round asking for the money.
Make her pay the money mate takes the piss
-
Or you try small claims against him
The piss in the other flat mates shampoo until they all share the costs
In my book if the other flat mates accepted the dosser, they should share the responsibillty!
-
it is just me thats out of pocket. he was staying here over the summer months when i had gone back home to devon to work my ass to to pay the rent and bills whilst he sat on his arse drinking beer all day
the bills did change quite significantly as he was using all the utilities just as much as the rest of us.
on the flip side ive got his parents phone number, and hopefully an address soon so will get in contact with them to find out his whereabouts
-
you wernt even there when he was staying there?
why the f**k did you pay for him then?!
-
because all the bills are set up as monthly and quarterly direct debits from my bank account, and then my flat mates pay me back. plus he was only supposed to be staying a couple of weeks, which would have been fine as the rest of our partners visit. plus i only realised there was something up when the quarterly water bills came through.
-
Right then. Lets cut through the nonsense.
Cory.
If you are the sole named person on the bills, the you are the sole person legally responsible for paying them. End of.
I take it you have a typical arrangement with your flat mates, in so much that, you "pay" for some bills, they for others, and you each pay back your equal share.
Unless you have this in writing, you haven't got a leg to stand on if someone decides they don't want to pay you back.
The boyfriend would fall into this category.
Your only option is to get the girlfriend to pay his share, or get him to.
Jonathan.
