Title: damaged wheel arch trim - repair recommendations?
Post by: fishyhamster on 05 May 2005, 01:53
Hi. I'm new to the forum, but I am sure you will be very helpfull!

i scratched and dented the trim over the rear wheel arch on my golf IV 1.8t (5 door) today - mistook a wall to be a hedge when driving through a tight gap...

Basically the only real damage is to the panel immediately above the wheel and just the section that sticks out. The paint is scratched off and the panel is dented in.

Took it to local VW bodyshop (derby) and was quoted £1200!! over half this was labour but i was told that the rear door, door sill, rear bumber would all need to be re done as well so the colour matches properly. (?)

I can't afford to spend anything like that much as I was thinking of selling the car soon anyway (getting company car and getting fed up of never ending intermittent engine problems - replaced MAF and engine coolent sensor in the past year which cured the problems for a while)

So, could anyone suggest any options for me? As far as I see it i could:

1) Try and sell the car in current state. 68K, otherwise in good condition. Would I get ~5K for it?

2) Get the proper repair and take the hit on insurance? (3yr no claims)

3) Find a nice friendly bodywork specialist who will patch up my car to a decent state (5 year old car so dont need it to be perfect) for considerably less than VW have quoted!

I would prefer option 3! but i don't really know anywhere in the Notts area.

Thank you for your help

Chris.
