Title: In tank fuel pickup
Post by: Craigwilson on 22 November 2011, 16:02
Ok its an 91 8v digi its done 235k its on its second engine but the fuel pickup is origional and i think its a cause of a missfire i have where the car just doesnt want to rev above 4k sometimes. How long do ypus reckon one of these intank fuel pumps should last? Is 235k too much for it?

P.s earlier today i had the plug off of the top and the car still started and reved so if it was finished it would still start ok

There are two pumps, one in the tank, one under the car. The one in the tank just lifts the fuel out to the main pump under the car....  If they start to weaken or fail, the car wont run, particularly with a low fuel level in the tank. Dont think this would cause a missfire  :undecided:

I know about the two pumps but when the pickup pump is unpluged the car still runs and its not really a missfire its just more of a lag then doesnt rev all the way to six when you ask it to. Could it be failing sometimes.

Just take the plug off the main pump under the car and then turn the ignition on and you should be able to hear the intank pump prime. If the intank one fails then this can cause fuel starvation at higher revs. They are about 20quid from gsf and it's a 20minute job to replace.

Yup replaced it 20quid exactley seems brand new so far the old one must have been failing, a mean 230000 miles of fuel through it.
