Title: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: Fraiser on 21 September 2003, 16:22
I was driving down the road and my car started jerking quite bad, its a 16 valve E reg. 3 Door. ithink it is a kjet.

it stalled so i started it back up and when pressing accelearator is felt like the fuel was not getting through it started to stutter etc and just conked out.

Tried starting it again it started ok- however when depressing the accelerator it conked out again.

so i towed the car to my local garage- we tried starting the car but it will not start at all now- fuel pump seems to be louder than usual also.

could you tell me where to find the engine code also please - thanks.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Engine code is on a sticker in the boot on the rear pannel or on the timing belt cover. Think it is a KR engine for that year and will be k jet. Check the fuel pressure, hope this helps, Steve.

thanks steve- do i check the pressure by taking off the fuel line near the isv and trying to start the car and see if it is a rush of fuel that is expelled??

Fuel pressure is checked at the metering unit, you will need specialised equipment to check it. Your local garage should have the kit to test it. Hope this helps, steve.

Hello Mate

I had a problem very similar Friday just gone with my Girl friends car (its a peugeot though? ??? I told her to buy a VW but she doesn't listen).  It broke down...The engine stalled and then when you tried to turn on the engine it would start up for 3 seconds and then switch off.  When I would start and rev the engine it would cut out instantaneously, I thought it had something to do with the accelerator cable......but the kind RAC man told me to get a new fuel pump relay and sure enuf he was spot on....don't know how he knew it was that.  ;D

I don't know about the earlier 16v engine and if it had a fuel pump relay but im sure the moderator or the other VW Geeks ;) can help you..

 :)Happy Motoring :D

Had the same problem on my first 16V years back. The main fuel pump had failed and was noisier than usual as it was just sat there spinning but not pumping any fuel. It would run but not very well as the fuel system pressure was too low. New main pump and all was good again. One thing to check before you blame the main pump is the header pump. This can be found under a round black panel on the right hand side of the boot, if this goes the main pump has to work harder and may fail as a result.

Did all th tests:

checked return pipe fuel gushes out when trying to start the car.

checked injetcors - theres fuel going through there.

cleaned out the isv etc all good.

But still will not start properly. starts up but dies straight away. checked the plugs etc they are dry- seems like no fuel getting in.

seems car is starting on fumes and cos no petrol is getting through it wont continue to idle. Been told it is the air flow meter- is this correct. took off the cover to air flow checked dish thingy no fuel is coming in there.

so basically i have fuel coming through but it is not coming through to where it should. >:(

and what sort of price should i be looking to pay for one- been quoted 65.00 plus vat  :( fromsecond hand dealer is very reliable but i do not want to pay that much. If anyone can help me get my beast back on the road i will appreciate it.
also checked the lift pump in the boot all seesm ok.
16valver e reg kjet.

Thanks, but we already tried that - still not working.

man im getting vexed with this car.

anone got a cheap airflow unit????

This is one of those "DONT TRY THIS AT HOME" type methods. :o
Pull out the injectors with the fuel pipes still on, bridge out the fuel pump relay so the pump runs when the ign is on, lift the air metering flap and you should see fuel spray from the injectors. Can also check for a good spray from the injectors at the same time. If you get fuel out, I think that the metering unit is ok and you may have an air leak (wont lift the flap = no fuel). Good luck, Steve.

Be very carefull with this method, major fire risk.

Where abouts are you? I replaced my air flow meter and found it wasn't the problem so you can have my, now spare, if you want, don't know if the 90 8V will fit on a 87 16V?

If it does and you're not far from Norwich we can sort something out, otherwise if you just pay for the postage it's yours!

The offer is much appreciated thanks ;D ;D

I have replaced the air flow unit which was 60 quid plus 40 notes for the labour which included all the testing at the local garage so it aint too bad.

Got my baby back on da road and seems to be running ok.

it is an 88 model form looking at the engine code  :D.

I do not think the 8 valvers have the saem unit as i was brreaking a 90 spec one and looked for one on that and it didi not have one on there.

Thanks everyone for your help.

90 spec 8v does not have a metering unit as it is digifant, they will have a 'heated strip' type airflow meter. Pre 88 8vs are fitted with k-jet injection which have the metering unit plunger type airflow meter. 16vs are ALL k-jets.

When you start it, what happens if you try and rev it, does it still just die?

we have been tryoing to start it agian but its like it wants to satrt but wont.

sometimes it feels like it is going to satrt but it doesnt.

this is driving me mad!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by: golfvr6 on 30 September 2003, 18:37
Is it just the idle thats the problem? can you actually drive it? have you checked the fuel mixture?
Title: Re:HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: Fraiser on 30 September 2003, 18:41

i have not tried to drive it cos as soon as we let off the throttle it dies.

How do i check the fuel mixture???

Buy a gunson colortune from halfords. Its like a spark plug with a window so you can see the colour of the combustion. The adjustment screw is somewhere in the metering unit on the airbox.

It is not easy to diagnose a fault remotely, I still think you have the original fault. As vr6 said prob a fuel fault, check the fuel pressure, try my "dont try this at home" test. If you have good spray, check for air leaks around the pipework from air flow meter to throttle body, esp the pleated rubber part. Good luck, Steve.

I have a mk2 16v K-jet too. I was in Germany at the time and I had a similar problem. I thought it was the fuel system but I took it to a VW garage. He diagnosed a faulty distributer and sure enough that is what it was.
