Post by: Golf mk4 reborn on 21 November 2011, 21:33
Hi,

I have a 2.0gti Golf w reg and my head gasket mixed and plus my springs are gone as well as my motor starter, and was just wondering if anyone had a idea was the cost would be to repair it and if its worth the hassle.

Thank you in advance

labour....anything up to £200 IMHO.

Are you 100% sure the head gasket is gone and not the oil cooler.

I think its my head Gasket cause, When i turn the car on it start giving me the stop sign and says check coolant, and my oil and water have mixed so I think my head gasket needs to be skimmed but to be honest this is my first golf and iv only had it for to weeks and hate VW already.

Is there anything in particular that I can do my self to find out exactly what's happened to the car?

Compression test the cylinders. Cheap and easy for a tester. If you get two cylinders low on compression (usually should be around 12 psi) then probably leaking between the two. If just one them leaking elsewhere.
Definitely check the oil cooler though cause this can perish and cause the oil to mix with coolant. Which makes it look like the head gaskets gone.

Bypass the cooler, drain and flush the cooling system through then run it for a day or so and see if it comes back.

Emm no!

Starter will be about £120 on its own head gasket kit £40 then the head may need skimming £50?  :undecided: + Oil,  oil filter, coolant £40 Labour At least £200 - £300 IMO

i'd say you were looking at £500 all in if you find a decent cheap garage
