Title: Unscrewing tie rods
Post by: wil892 on 21 November 2011, 13:59
Hi

I'm replacing my manual rack for a power steering one at the moment. The engine is out of the car so I have found a way to put it in without taking off the tie rods.
However I did try taking off the tie rods before I realised this and I'm not sure if I might have damaged the rack.

Basically I put the main body of the rack in a buffered vice so it couldnt twist, then pulled back the rubber boot and used a spanner on the inner tie rod nut to apply torsion to the tie rod.

Now i'm worried that putting that force of trying to remove the inner tie rod from the rack may have damaged the inner parts of the rack, specifically seals or the piston driving the powersteering. There was some rotational movement of the inner toothed part of the rack when trying to remove it but I'm not sure if this is normal or not.
I assume if the rack was mounted in the car then removing then the tie rods would have to be removed in this way?
There were no signs of leakage prior to my meddling!
Cheers
Will
