Sorry i did a search but found nought.
Ok it might be the fact that my BMW was a better more expensive car but that aside I think the road noise from my petrol gti 3door with 18's is nothing short of disgracefull at anything over 20mph. Annoying after all the reviews etc said they where whisper quiet. I know people are going to say there's is fine and I'm fussy but trust me it's sh!te to the point of being embarrassing.
By the way Craig's gtd 5door with 17's (both of us on goodyears) is fine.
My question is:
how can I make it better?
Are there spots on the car to pay attention too?
Can I get any Audi parts etc to help?
I have already spent £550 on goodyears which helped a little, £70 on dynamat and sticky sound sponge stuff and covered the entire boot and boot floor.
My next plan is to remove the rear quarters and fill with dynamat and sound felt stuff maybe some sponge sound stuff.
Any experience you can give or tips from people in the know would be greatly appreciated and hopefully we can come up with the easiest most cost effective way to maximise the quaitlty of our medium quality high quality ( well mine anyway) £27000~ cars.
Thanks kids.

I had the same complaints as you.
The tyre roar is quite something with brand new tyres. This should become a bit less after 1000 miles. However, and unfortunately, your car with 18" wheels will never be as quiet as Craig's who runs 17".
Check your pressures are correctly set at 38 psi all round.
If you are still unhappy with the tyre roar (I stii am) then you'll have to bite the bullet, or change to the new ContiSportContact 5s, or get 17" wheels like Craig's beauties or change the car.
A most annoying problem.
-
Is is still wrecking your head Will, it is a lot quieter than it was but I can't help but think it's a 3 door vs 5 door thing.
I thought it would be well sorted after the amount of soundproofing / dynamat we fitted last week.
We'll fit my rear wheels to your rear one day next week and see if it gives the same level of silence we get from the GTD.
We still love it though
-
Turn up the radio, dyna audio/rcd510.
-
Fit a Milltek & Turn the Radio up, you wont hear road noise then
-
I had my doors dynamat-ed when I installed better speakers. Made cock-all difference to the road noise intrusion through the sides...
Whilst the noise from traffic ahead is very quiet, three years on I still notice the noise of traffic passing by. It's like the doors are ajar or a window's cracked open. And then there's the Bridgestone roar to contend with...
I remember all the magazine reports about how quiet the car was meant to be. I put it down to lazy journalism; just rehashing and accepting verbatim the press pack handout.
-
Maybe your door need adjusting at the top? I have to say my golf has one of the quietest cabins I've ever had

Mine is the same. No wind noise even at speed and a very well insulated cabin except for tyre roar over some surfaces. Latter is very difficult to tame. My next car will have 17" wheels so the alloys will have to be cute like yours.
Be interesting to read your findings with 17" on Will's car. I can perfectly understand him wrt the tyre roar. I remember how irritated it made me.
-
Try different tyres
Michelin Pilot Exaltos or Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas
I'm not sure wheel size makes a huge difference .. the road noise with my current R (on 19"'s and Dunlop Sportmaxx GT's) is quieter than my Mk5 Gti (on 17" Continental Sport Contact II's)
try getting a noise meter and compare the internal noise with other cars ... you may be surprised :nerd:
-
Will:
A great deal of the roar is coming through the front footwells and from the rear wheel arches. I found this slightly worse in a 3 door hatchback with the rear tyre roar. Perhaps some damping pads and sound absorption for the front footwells and behind/along the rear seat and on those wheel arches could help.
Doc's idea of swapping your rears for 17" should hopefully tame a bit of the noise - but you'll have to sit in the back with Doc in the front. (Doc in charge!). Do a db SPL (linear) measurement for the two situations. Pointless probably getting a weighted dbA reading IMO. BTW, you don't want to make your car too heavy.
Another port of call is Snoops, the Lube Emperor. I have a feeling that his extensive lubing and bunging up of all gaps has made his car as silent as a crypt. He has also made some aero mods to the undertray which again will tend to quieten things. All useful little bits.
One thing for sure: saloons like the C Class and 3 Series are quieter cars.
This is an interesting thread and the results of your experiments would be most informative.

Which is really odd cause my Winter Contacts on 18's are far quieter than my Dunlop Sportmaxx GT's on 19's!
-
Nice idea's thanks kids, I won't be changing the tyres again though the car had only done 200 miles when I changed them the first time ( before I'd even washed it for the first time strangely ) that was to help with the road noise!
An interesting thing I've noticed is how loud my horn is in the cabin, not that I care of course but it will be interesting tomorrow when I compare it to docs gtd. Our thinking is there is more sound proofing in the diesel. I'll let you know.
Thanks again keep them coming.
-
That was one thing I noticed between the MK5 and the MK6, the drop in road noise.
In fact that was one of the things I was slightly disappointed about, it was nearly too quiet and refined and not as raw.
Sounds a bit strange if you have excessive road noise..
-
Just to clarify, my GTD is silent in the tyre dept with the same tyres, although Wills are 18"
Gtmaxxx's are pretty loud, both Will and I had them on our MK5 R32's
I can't help but think its a 3 door thing :undecided:
Anyone with 5 door GTIs hearing lots of road noise or all 3 doors?

There is according to VW, as the Diesel engine is louder at tickover. I checked on this about a year ago.

Parts department please....

my 5 door on 18s has a lot of road noise but i think its partly down to tyre size and the bridgestones bing a noisy tyre.
my clio 197 on sport contact 3's wasn't this loud - but all the rattles and engine noise probably drowned out the road noise!
-
BTW, Audi now use spray-on noise insulation under the bonnet of the Q3. It's lighter and more effective. Worth investigating.
-
Boss, I could spray it onto the face of all the annoying pepper I know.
-
Running a 5 door on Bridgestones during the summer and Contis in the winter months, the Contis are quieter than the Bridgestones but noise has never been a problem as I find my cabin nice and quiet, the only time I get noise is when I have the hole in the roof open on slide and I get a dreadful booming noise.

Sling those JL audio subs in and some of that fat genesis amplification etc and all you'll hear is sweet sounds - I keep promising to fit some of my tackle but I think I'm a little too old for all that now

I am thoroughly ashamed of you. How could you keep listening to what is such low-fi?
Get some decent vibrations from your woofer and tweeter or I'll beat you up.

Between us we've got enough quality car hifi to sink a battleship
It's just hard work when it takes up half your boot etc :undecided:

Forget the dicky, do the doors and woof under the passenger seat.
I know it's a bit OTT with those fabulous Genisis amps. Oooooh, such pleasure to be so musical!

You know the score Craig if I fill my boot with hifi where would I put all the dead bikers?

As someone whos been into top end sound quality ice since the 80s (also a member of talkaudio for toooo many years and moderate a forum of the world champ) i know what you meen about the road noise.
Dynamat is not strickly speaking a sound dampener its a resonator reduction device. It basically adds mass so changing the resonance frequency of the panel reducing the noise that way.
Its good to RTA(real time analyse) the frequencys that are the issue and then try and find them using the mike.
The 3 door suffers more because the sound comes in from the rear quarters.
VW use to, but don't know if they still do, fit a foam in a plastic bag over the rear arches on 90s polos i used these on an ibiza i had which helped a large amount. Nothing stopping you making your own out of closed cell foam.
You want sound absorbsion not resonance reduction so you want some closed cell foam for the arches floors and boot floor.
A couple of things i found that helped a very small amount was fitting the TT back bottom arm cover but it was such a small amount but makes a difference when its raining.
Another thing that helped a tiny amount was my rear wheel arch inner covers i resealed with more water repelent, so behind them inside the arches stay totally dry. I know a trick some car manufactureres do to the press fleets is fill this void with closed cell foam reducing road noise.
Also try altering the tyre pressures i found using 36psi the same as what the mk5 used.

Known but were going for belts and braces as the panels sound crap when you thump em, we're putting this everywhere: http://www.efoam.co.uk/Segg.php
We don't have an RTA to hand to be fair.
Tyres pressure has been done.
Can you find me a Pioneer ODR system as I've been looking for one for years for an old smoker I have?
-
Cool, I'm going down the route of copying what's on/in the gtd as that's fine, but also I've ordered:
eBay
200660047330 dynamat for rear quarter panels and front wheel arches.
230704089736 foam for rear quarters
260892835200 dense foam for fire wall and and footwells
And more 300612741776 sticky backed dense foam for the rear side of rear quarter trim panels.
Oh and an s3 under tray as its stupid it's not there from the off.
And thats all the money I'm willing to spend on this.
-

Are you wanting the old ODR from the 90s or the newer versions that have been going for the past 5 years or so?
Talkaudio.co.uk/vbb classified forum is a good place to start or post a wanted on there and someone will probably have something hidden away as theres a load of horders on there.
-
The original 90's version of course
-
Keep an eye on talkaudio as bits often come up. Mulletboy2 on there often sells bits of the collections of ODR stuff he has.
-
Should have bought a 5 door.
-
As said perviously I would check all door alignments and esp the rubber around all of these. I had to have mine adjusted a number of times
-
I actually have no problem with the doors or windows. It must be the rear quarters, I don't remember the brochure mentioning the 3door package with optional resonance chambers.
-
Just another thought .. you could check your suspension bushes are'nt worn/hardened/out of shape, as these transmit the vibration and noise into the chassis.
I used to drive Vauxhall Vectra's (as company cars ) and a later model was a lot noisier than an earlier model I had. The garage said that the suspension bushes had been changed between models and a lot of customers had complained about road noise.
-

Not really, as my Contis were the Summer Contacts and the older 2's version (not the newer 3's that are now out) and not the softer Winter rubber like yours. Plus the Contis were on a Mk 5 Gti, not the current Mk 6
-
Good idea but it's only 2 weeks old. Thanks

Could still be FUBAR (NOT FUBAR'd BTW)
-
Try different tyres
Michelin Pilot Exaltos or Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas
I went from the original 18" Bridgestones which I thought were ok to the Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas and even my wife commented on how noisy they were!!!!! They did settle after a few 100 hundred miles but still nosier than the Bridgestones if you ask me.
-
Wil what car is it GTD or GTI ? I never had any problems with sound on my Golf's if I was you I would dump it on the forcourt tell them to get it sorted and your not happy ??
-
I haven't had any noise issues with my 3-door GTI. It's actually quieter then my previous 2007 3-series bmw. Hope you get your car sorted out.
-
Thanks pal so do I.
I fitted a diesel under tray today and didn't tell my missus. After a short drive she commented on how the car seams quieter than the other day. So result! Good start.
-
Following your mods I think it's about the same as my GTD now mate
Just got to get these fairy lights working now

Funny I just put on four winter tiers and the first thing I noticed was a huge drop in road roar. My wife who never picks up changes in noise when it comes to cars also said to me what a difference there is.
So I put it down to what type of tier is on the wheels

Is the GTD engine undertray similar to the Bluemotion one?
-
Not sure but they look the same, it was all plastic with no sponge or "city blocks" that you get on other cars.
-
Similar to mine? http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=206081.0

5 pages of thread and all you need to do is turn the radio up a bit...

But if you are saddled with any VW OEM sound system the distortion would be unbearable.
-
Yes snoopy thats the one.
And asker is correct the radio is crap.
Try useing the phone in my car, wasn't happening but it's getting there.
Also try whispering sweet nothing into your mates mums ear when you take them out for some sex and maybe some food.

I don't turn the radio up as i like to hear the police cars and ambulances around me so i can avoid them.

Nice one. Just got my dealer to order an under tray. My car seem quiet but I don't mind it being even quieter. :)
-
is the under tray the same as the S3 one? full length which screws to the subframe
-
That pounds the same to me.
It won't be like a new car but it is better. All these little things add up.
-
Good idea but it's only 2 weeks old. Thanks
Make sure the "transyt packing" has been removed from the suspension then
... believe me this has escaped pre-delivery inpections in the past
-
Will do I presume they are blocks in the springs or something like that.

Had the winter tyres fitted yesterday. The first thing I did this morning was turn the radio down. Normally, I have to turn it up at a certain point on my journey to work. I used to think there was a problem with the radio as I just could not hear it properly at normal driving speeds. It was hard to believe the difference the winter tyres have made. The car was so so quite this morning. Even on the roughest, most noisy part of the road the sound levels did not rise. Infact the most noise was coming from the engine - not the road!
The car now sounds as quiet as I thought it would. As I spend so much time in my car on poor roads - those Bridgestones are not going back on in the summer!

Similar being said here: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=213963.0

Hello.
I have stuffed every corner of the rear of the car with dynamat and sound absorbing sponge etc. I have taken pictures all the way and once I figure out how to get them off my phone and onto the forum
I will put them up.
The end result is much much better, especially the rear wheel arches.
I have done some basic db readings before and after and will publish them also.
I did this for you so give me a hug.
Bye.

Err; OK; seeing as it's Xmas - one (manly) hug!
I'd be interested in the photos and how-to on this one when you get the chance. Did you needs lots of money's worth of the Dynamat?
Bye.

Same here, put the winters on a couple of weeks ago and the car is so quiet, I put it down to moving on to 17s from 18s
