Right, I've noticed some scary developments (or steps backwards) in young people these days. In a group discussion recently with people of ages ranging from 20-29 it was discovered that peoe didn't know the owing things:
Who Charles Darwin is
Mariah Carey is Half black
The capital of Northern Ireland
Who discorvered penicillin
What penicillin does
Britains only female prime minister
The first mass produced ford
Who Allah is
The location of Andorra
Theres loads more stuff like this but has anyone else noticed that the Great British population is getting thicker?
Thank your labour government!
-
I overheard a conversation on the park and ride bus the other morning:
'Would you be breaking the law if you killed someone if you were an assassin? Because... It's like your job innit.'
And many other gems.
-
Thank your labour government!
You can't blame Labour for everything
Maybe people need to take responsibility for themselves.

I've noticed it too... especially people who can't spell

There does seem to be a gerneral lack of curiosity these days. If I don't know something the first thing I do is look it up (usually on wiki).
I didn't know where Andorra is either. :lipsrsealed:

These are the kind of questions I put up with from our 11yo
The world is getting thicker as more and more 'stuff' gets handed to people on a platter, it can be found out by the lack of general world knowledge and the way they treat the world around them.
Even just waiting to cross the road at traffic lights people were bunching up and standing on the ROAD and in the middle blocking cars from coming round the corner this morning driving through Oxford! FFS! Right here (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=oxford&hl=en&ll=51.75517,-1.259694&spn=0.008966,0.022724&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=17.570731,46.538086&vpsrc=6&hnear=Oxford,+United+Kingdom&t=m&z=16&layer=c&cbll=51.755193,-1.259532&panoid=cCFMb3UPCNtlWerwUGh1DA&cbp=12,49.55,,0,18.61) on the BUS lane. It's a BUS lane, not a f@cking pedestrian lane!
And yesterday a cyclist rode straight over the road from the right where that woman on a bike is, to the left side and carried on as if a Volvo wasn't 2 foot from taking him out and would have if he hadn't seen him coming and braked, he was even kitted up in cycling gear, FFS. A female cyclist died a few weeks ago after an RTA with a lorry just up the same road as this place, you'd have hoped people would be more aware of the dangers around them after that!
/rant.

I could confidently answer 5 of them.
However I don't give a f**k about Mariah Carey's heritage.
And I can spell 'people'
I'm 21 (so in the age bracket) and don't consider myself 'thick', as I have strengths in many other fields of knowledge.

You can be picky and point out that she is not half black. Only a quarter.
Mother is white
Father is half African American half Hispanic (Venezuelan)

The one thing that really gets me is spelling and just general conversation. I am not the best speller, nor do I ever pretend to be a bright person. I didn't do amazingly well at school, in fact I was Mr.Average. But what baffles me are the following.
People who don't understand the simplest of English, like the use of the word Brought and Bought, it is one of those things that really gets to me. Or when someone has a rant but its one huge paragraph thats so hard to read that you don't bother in the end..
Only yesterday I was talking to a Linguist out here about my generation compared to previous generations. My grandfather could turn his hand to anything, he could pick up a saw and chisel and make perfectly square window-frames. As his family grew he built the house to accommodate them, building extensions etc.
Before deploying out on Ops, I had to attend a course on these generators. I got put in a group with two lads who are "technicians".. I use this term loosely. You see, out here, if you are in a FOB and your fan belt brakes you are expected to replace it yourself. This is the story of one of the techs....
To get to the fan, you have to remove the guard, 6x 13mm nuts. I handed him a 3/8ths Drive rachet, a 3 inch extension and a 13mm socket. He first of all couldn't get the extension onto the rachet, I showed him to press the back of the rachet to allow fitment. He then tried to put the socket end of the socket onto the 3/8th extension drive, rather than the square bit. Keeping my calm I showed him the errors of his way.
From here I showed him that the back of the ratchet has two possibilities, righty tighty, lefty loosey. Set it up before you go trying to find the bolts and it will be easier. I set it to loose and handed it to him. He began on the nearest nut. It got to the point where the tension was off the nut and couldn't provide enough force for the ratchet. He then switches to tighten and tightens it back up.. He couldn't get it into his head what was happening...Again I showed him to use one hand to brace the extension to provide the tension.. Same thing again..
In the end he left me to do it.. I would just like to point out that this Technician, is currently deployed on his own, in theatre, in a FOB with said generator.. Oh and he decided to lean on the turbo after the thing had been running for 2hrs, as you can imagine, arm was a mess!
These are the people I worry for, my first house, I picked up a book, read how to tile, I tiled. I wanted to change the light rose, knocked the power off and changed it.. I built a picket fence, each strip at an individual height to keep the uniform look around the garden...
Yet daily I see people around me doing the dumbest things..
-
I agree - some people are ridiculously stupid. I reckon some have never been taught how to think things through or think outside the box.
I recently changed the siphon mechanism in our toilet cistern, despite never having done an ounce of plumbing in my life. I've also put up shelves, tiled the shower cubicle and replaced some of the light switch fittings in our house. No one showed me how to do these things but I looked up what I needed to know and everything else was basic common sense.
-
Grrr Kids and adults that talk like Ali G whether white or Black it just sucks, how can you be clever if you talk like a Cnut.
Not being funny but have you seen how easy GCSE's are these days and how many people cant even pass them, no wonder why we need so many foriegn workers as our offspring cant even count or speak English.
I also think the use of Skunk and Amphet amongst the younger generations is a massive problem, I see so many teenagers who cant add up past what an half ounce costs or hold any sort of attention span :lipsrsealed:

I dont think the current education system helps... I went all the way through primary school to university and in 15+yrs of education didnt really learn anything of any distinct value (maths + english aside).
Most of what I learnt was through the want and need to know things. University is a perfect example of this... they set the guide lines and everything else you do is off your own back. Not great value for £10k a year now is it :undecided:

We are all pushed down the Uni route too.. I wish I had been a "dumb" pupil and gone to college and done an apprentaship, got a trade and worked off my own back.. I can't believe we were directed towards bullsh!t university courses from the age of 14.
-
the thinking behind that was why would you wanna work silly hours 77days a week when you can go to uni hopefully find a good job.
not really true is it now...

agreed. if i had learnt a trade, i could have had my own business by now. maybe even a house half paid up.
-
I 100% agree, most of what is taught now is either so basic or of little use.
The amount of work experience kids I see that cant even do the most basic tasks is shocking.
What is more shocking is the lack of any drive or ambition, if its not available on a plate most young adults dont give a sh!t.
Dont want to start anything but the polytechnic conversion into uni's has flooded the education system with easy to get on courses with little value in the real world.
Now the Students taking these subjects or substandard courses have to pay more than they are worth and get a degree in some subject which is practicaly pointless.
I think Univesities should offer less choice and higher quality and be more selective on who they take rather than seeing $$$$$.
Nothing wrong with being an apprentice or or a skilled tradesman, some people suit this type of work and should be encouraged to do so. We would not so reliant on migrants or banks to keep our economy going if we had people who could make stuff which can be sold rather than be lead into a life of a second rate artist or fashion stylist.......

I wonder how many people actually realise this though, I am 28 now and I realised this a while back, probably before I joined up...

Oh it's definately the education system letting kids down, my missus bless her, isn't the smartest of people and has trouble with spelling and math - she's got better since I met her, but it's still not average. Her school was one of the sh!ttest in Reading and something like 3 people passed in her final year.
I see this with our eldest, last night she had Math homework to do on a website for High school kids that links in with their school and their progress etc anyway the first set of questions and she's stumped. "We've never been shown this" she says, I said so how are you meant to do the work, "I dunno" she says :undecided: So I had to spend the next 30 minutes showing her! Surely the school should be teaching them this before asking them to do the work? :undecided:

I left school at 16 with my best results at GCSEs being a D! I started working at a rag factory for 3 months, as a stop gap before I joined the Navy. I was Mr Avarage through basic and seamanship training, then when I started my professional training, I failed the second exam. I was told I would have a re-sit but if I didnt pass that, I would be back classed, and one more failure would result in dismissal. I learn't pretty quickly although I was never stupid, I just didn't have the drive to succeed and was content being a 'Jack the Lad' as I was still an immature 16 year old. I passed the re-sit and the rest is history anyway. Now they have 2 resits, if they fail again they have to take the whole module again at the end of the course, and have 3 goes again before being 'considered' for a different trade. In reality, marks are knocked up to ensure these retards pass the course. Its diabolical how easy things are for young people nowadays. If I didn't buck up my ideas back then, I have no doubt I would have ended up back in that rag factory on £115 a week. I realised from early on in my professional career that you sink or swim (pardon the pun), you have to do it for yourself. This work ethic is in very short supply for modern youth unfortunately, as they are content to fanny about and take drugs for the majority of their adulthood.
Again this can be put down to modern society, and the fact that alot of these kids have no role model. My Dad did very little for me, although he was always there for advise. As bored-welsh-lad put, I too did masses of DIY in my first house. General decorating, fitting a bathroom, fitting a kitchen etc etc. I asked my Dad how he learned how to do it, and basically his Dad passed away leaving my Nan with 5 Kids and only a part time job to get by, so they learned by reading up on it. Now they actually had to research this stuff by going to the library, or reading books. EVERYTHING is there via Google now, so the lazy youth of today dont even need to get off their lazy fat arses to read up on it. I just bought a Collins DIY book and went from there. This would not even cross the minds of alot of youngsters now.

Since I've left school my spelling has gone right downhill. I keep thinking "is it spelt that way or this way?" and have to write it out to see.

Tinternet, lack of care.
I'm not like most of my mates, I work 8-4:30, flying through both my college courses and earned £2000 last month, in a good relationship and couldn't ask for better friends.
So DILLIGAF what the internet thinks? Hopefully not.

Ah, that's because all that money earned went straight out on other things.
Payed off couple of debts and bought another auto Micra to do up and sell. Also bout a lot of window cleaning equipment that a mate is now doing and I've gone 50/50 with him even though I'm not doing physical work I've done the advertising and payed for the equipment and roofrack for his car.
Trying to save a lot ATM.
-
the first thing I would address is the micra... do you get people shouting "about fecking time, where have you been?? Im starving!!!" Everytime you get out of your micra.. I dont think I know anyone that has owned one apart from delivery drivers
-

Again, you know nothing.
Why would want anything other then the Micra ATM?
My mum and sister use it in the week. I use it at weekends.
I went halves with my sister. This means HALF the car cost, HALF insurance, HALF on parts etc.
This saves me loads of money. I also want to refurb the Golf. Why would I buy anything else, bearing in mind my sister wanted an Auto Micra as they're reliable and amaing on fuel?
There is no point in me spending another load of money on my own car while insurance is this dear. I don't need the car in the week other then the occasional evening. It's a waste of money.
In April if the insurance eases up, I'll have my Golf back and will be saving for something lairy while I can, something that won't lose value. I'm single and at home, might as well do it til PROPER bills start coming in.
To me, this isn't stupid, this is sensible. It saves money and as we all know, it's tight ATM.
-
Still.... a micra
would rather be a bus w4nker than drive a micra :lipsrsealed:

Well nice to see that you can't come up with anything decent. I assume you're a man of financial tendancies seeing as you rent property etc, stereotype yes but ah well. I assumed you'd understand.
I could continue using the Golf or save up the £2K a year saved (another 500 saving with my sister driving, £1500 without) and buy something stupidly decent in a year or so's time.
-
You say £2k a year saved... yet claim to earn £2k a month. Make your mind up... or are you again displaying the ability to contradict yourself in virtually every post

schools are not how they should be, but when i was in school we had kids who just did not want to learn. always disrupting classes and the like. teachers can not teach those who do not have any intention of learning. kids from third world countries manage to learn in shot hole class rooms and get granted visas to come here and make lots of money, good luck to them. if people here do not want the jobs there are billions more who do

which brings us back round to.. when they see their parents dont have to work, why should they? the state will take care of them and for everything else there is Jeremy Kyle

I get paid a daily rate 365 days a year. Not what I do, its what I know!
Navy mate. Problem is that when you work for the fleet maintenance group and the MOD scraps half of that fleet, work drys up. Finish at 12 most days, and have been finishing at 10 the last 2 weeks. 2 ships in for maintenance periods next week though so will be back to finishing at 12 again.

Hmm. If you don't care what we think. The least you can do is never post something on here that warrents and answer/opinion.
Then you can live happily ever after.
Brings me a fair whack of amusement when I'm bored.
I'm aiming for a £2500 income this month, I'll let you know how it goes, although it will require a lot more effort.
I've earned that this month working 20 hour weeks.
Where do you work to be on £32 an hour?
quite a few engineering jobs are about that,
in my dept theres me (aprentice so on sh!t wages) and 2 contract staff, both the contractors are on £31 a hour working up to 40 hour weeks and can do over time if they fancy.
however not so long ago a lad from down in reading (same company but different office) came up to work for us and he was again on about £30 a hour, but when he was down in reading he was on about £15-20 more than that but couldnt find many jobs down there and was told that they didnt need him anymore but he could come up north and work if he wanted, and that was the easiest option so he did that untill he found a job downsouth offering about 50 quid a hour.

Thats nearly £60,000 a year. I'm in the wrong profession here!

a solicitor i have worked with charges £250 an hour. the tax barrister who work is refered to charges £1000 an hour
certainly need to have a lot of money worth hiding to wanna pay him that kinda cash.
schools are not how they should be, but when i was in school we had kids who just did not want to learn. always disrupting classes and the like. teachers can not teach those who do not have any intention of learning. kids from third world countries manage to learn in shot hole class rooms and get granted visas to come here and make lots of money, good luck to them. if people here do not want the jobs there are billions more who do
which brings us back round to.. when they see their parents dont have to work, why should they? the state will take care of them and for everything else there is Jeremy Kyle
exactly right. money see money do.

You say £2k a year saved... yet claim to earn £2k a month. Make your mind up... or are you again displaying the ability to contradict yourself in virtually every post
on the previous page he says hes in a relationship then he says hes not....
nah just kidding i dont really give a sh!t if your lieing or bigging your self up or anything.
@RentedR32: 2k saving on using the Micra over the Golf.
As for the term single I mean not married/living together.
Like with anything, start small spend little, work hard and the pounds will come.

Sensible outlook dude, wish I'd had that at 18!

Thank you, I owe it to my boss tbf he started with that outlook and now doesn't care about money, doesn't work a lot and fairly stress free life.

To be fair, it was pretty obvious that's what you meant.

Sorry to be such a thingy but "PAYED"... come on people.. It's the most simple of words to spell... PAID

Problem isn't the people who type like the above, because I generally scroll past their comments because its that shocking.. Its the ones who seem to have a basic grasp of the english language but drop absolute bombshells, such as...
Their and there..
and bought and brought
and payed and paid.
Enough and Enuff
The most simple of english seems to have been lost. The other thing I find shocking is spelling, I can't spell for sh!t! I know I can't. But google chrome/firefox is good enough to tell you when it thinks you have spelt something wrong.. Are people too lazy to click on it and just correct it.. Really?
-
I overheard a conversation on the park and ride bus the other morning:
'Would you be breaking the law if you killed someone if you were an assassin? Because... It's like your job innit.'
And many other gems.
PMSL Thats well funny

Theres a bird at our work he decided to microwave her dinner in a metal tin. When I notcied I said what the hell are you doing that will blow the microwave up she said shut up your lying pmsl

My phone just says payed..... :undecided:

Payed is a correct if obsolete version of "paid".
It's in The Bible.

Ah, I thought it was something to do with giving money for something or having to pay a debt, debt payed or something but wasn't sure.

I understand the point of this thread entirely. I see the same thing everywhere. Text Speak especially annoys me, to the extent that if any friends use it when texting me, i purposely don't reply until I get it in real English.
With regards to earnings. Honestly boys! It really doesn't matter who earns what or the most. As long as we're all happy with what we have nobody else will really give a sh!t. I rather be paid less and happy in my job than earn more but dread going to work every morning.
This isn't a pissing contest remember. If you're unsure, read the first post of this thread again. (assuming you can read)

its even worse when people use text speak but the words actually longer than the f**king word there not spelling right, i mean fare enough if someone puts u instead of you because it saves a bit of space and typing ect but when then put words that are longer it really annoys me!

I don't really see why people would get so caught up on grammar and punctuation when texting :undecided:
Oh and as this is about people 20ish years old, i'm 21 in my 3rd year at uni at a former polytechnic... doing geography
Cross so many stereotypes there hahaa, but i went to a ridiculously bad school, managed to get 8 C grade GCSE's with all usual subjects (maths, science, english, geography history Etc)
I agree with everyone on here that has said that we are all funneled and pushed towards university, thinking back it would have been good to learn a trade, although I'm not that great at the hands on stuff, would still be nice to learn how to do stuff... Always buy haynes manuals, read through, try and get stuck in, even if its just changing bulbs, wiring in new speakers and stuff, pathetic i know, but its a start!!
But i think it is about willingness to learn. For example, some kids i used to go to school with have sh!t all over their FB's about rapping and all this gangster b0llocks! makes me want to go up to where they have their f@cking "rap battles" or whatever they do and drag them all to a job centre. Edit Useless fatherless sons ((not my words, but it works if u want to leave it there hahahaa)) (these kids are like 18-23).
Is it really that hard to find a college course or something and plan to have a good life that doesn't involve sponging off the state??
I work part time in the co-op too, have done since i turned 16 (I'm 21 now) and its shown me what i can be doing for the rest of my life if i don't work hard at uni... it's pretty scary. I work with such cretins! 26 year olds, 30 year olds living at home, both engaged to fat ugly girls who work in sh!t jobs too (not that the fat or ugly bit matters). They spend money on wide screen 3D TVs and haven't learnt to drive, no GCSE's no A levels or anything like that! They love to call in sick and they are just pathetic!
(my older brother had no real qualifications, is now assistant manager in a bigger store, training to be manager, hes 22) So you can work your way up, not THAT difficult!
But then again, its capitalist society... therefore people need to be in these low level unskilled jobs for the economy to grow, so these people are needed, right? I just feel sorry for them in a way...
Rant over...
Btw why is everyone being so harsh to Micra boy? (although i f@cking hate micras, stupid old bint in an automatic one smashed in to the back of me while i was in learning!!! shat me right up!) He seems to be doing alright, seems to have a good work ethic!!

Because customer wanted the car back asap and I can then fix this and sell on. Its the lack of time etc because at work I've got to do the firms jobs. Plus it kept him happy and should work out in the end.

tbf, she probably meant reinstall, so many people ask how to reboot a computer, when they mean reinstall.
