Title: Battery - Starter or altenator whats causing the problem
Post by: Bigdunc on 14 November 2011, 18:06
ok guys i recenely fixed my car to find now i get a single click after turning key

I tested battery and its readying 12.88v not sure what the amps are, i charged battery up to 13.33v on my home charger and car starts at 13.33v so i have the car running for 15 mins doing altenator tests

with car at idle i get betweek 13.70-14v with lights on it dosent make much difference and reving the engine it dosent change much iver

now i turned the car off for few mins and then went to start again and just get a click from the starter

it seams iver the battery isnt holding a charge or the starter motor is needing about 13v to start the car

or even the altenator isnt charging the battery enough, but to me it seams the battery is losing charge but it still shows more than 12.5v

can anyone shead some light :)

ok my mate come over whos a mechanic we plugged the battery back in and it started first time, strange as hell as he didnt actually touch anything lol, while we got the car started he had a look at voltage he said that seams about right, we turned it off and on again few times to check it started and seamed ok, he did say if it dosent start again tap the starter motor as it could be on its way out, so im going to give it a try in the morning see if she starts if not then ill look in to changing the starter motor

Are the points in good condition? as in the starter solenoid.
Had this before on a mk2.
