Title: Notifying Insurance Company
Post by: JigsawJay on 11 November 2011, 10:25
Guys,

For modifications such as fitting LED Tail lights - did you notify your insurance company and if so how much did it cost extra per month?

I'm not sure if it's required or not - fitting OEM tail lights seems a bit silly to notify them over but then I have no idea what invalidates policies.

A dealer has quoted me c£600 to buy and fit them (i think this includes recoding).

Thanks for help in advance :)

I (we, thanks Doc ) fitted my LED rears on monday, i paid £439 for mine from a dealer inc 15% discount just because i asked for one so that quote is way to steep imo! Fit them yourself and ask around on here for someone to help with the coding, even if you have to travel a bit it'll still be cheaper than the dealer quote.

I would advise calling and asking them in advance. I changed my lights when I had a mkIV, and they charged no extra; but they did note it down on the wording in the policy details. They may take a view that it could make the car more attractive to theives?

In any case it's important (and in your own interests) for your company to be aware of any changes from original spec; whether that's OEM or otherwise. That way they can't try and weedle their way out of paying up in event of an accident / claim etc.

A friend of mine used to work in insurance, and there are some companies out there who will look for any excuse to get out of paying up; and as he said they have inspectors / loss assessors who know exactly what to look for regarding changes to cars; mapping included! If they note unnotified external changes; that's likely to increase their interest in looking deeper should they choose too.

Hopefully for tail lights you'll not get charged anything though.

Jimble - which dealer did you use?

The £617 includes the fitting and ensuring they are working etc plus no worries concerning warranty as main dealer is fitting (i know its a silly concern but its a brand new car - dealer will fit before i even pick it up)

Willenhall Coachcraft mate but ring round a couple of local ones and tell them the price i got, worth a try. They were originally £517

I wonder if I should inform my Insurance Company that I have changed my stardard H7 Halogen bulbs to the Auto Express award winning Philips Extreme Vision ones?

£517 sounds about right. They're quoting £100 for fitting so if i can get them at £439 i can get them fitted by dealer prior to pick up for £539 total cost which would be ace :)

They said they haven't done an install before so i'm not sure :s

I guess if I buy them from BKS Tuning and have them shipped over in plenty of time. Then get the lights from the other dealer it cant go too wrong.

Although it does beg the question - why not do it myself and save the £100.

I guess it adds the extra safety net of knowing that if it all does go tits up the dealer is responsible to fix it rather than me .

I won't be telling my insurance company about my rear lights as they are OEM and factory fitted so there is no need, I maybe wrong having that view but they can kiss my @ss

Great soundtrack, love QOTSA

With regards to the OP and your dilemma, surely it's a no-brainer? Fit them yourself and save the £100, from that video it appears to be undoing/redoing 10 nuts and adding 2 adaptor cables...I'm sure a monkey could manage it!

Evidence of people invalidating insurance policies by not declaring modifications? :lipsrsealed:

Absolutely no way would this invalidate your insurance

It's not a performance mod, it's using OEM parts and doesn't add any value to the car, make it more stealable and he assessor wouldn't give a toss ifthe worse happened. He would have to be a real VW bore to even know LED lights weren't on early the GTD too

I informed my insurance company about my LED tails, and they weren't really interested. No increase in premium but noted on their system.
I felt better for it, just in case.

The upgraded wheels were also noted but the policy wasn't loaded.

The re-map was another matter and my bottom is still sore from that.

That was my previous car. This time round I'm keeping it standard...*

*Wishful thinking, I know, I know..........
