Hi last week my car started to struggle to start an then after about 5 mins of driving the engine sounded really tappety ,
It has been like this ever since, I have done oil and filter change an this hasnt solved it,
It is also struggling when under load,
The oil light or buzzer hasnt come on, But my mate has said its the OIL PUMP,,
Does anybody have any ideas,,

Get the pressure tested with a gauge.

Dont know why this has been posted twice on here,

Price of a sump gasket just check the oil strainer its proberly clogged up with carbon and crap!

You seem 2 know alot about mk2 mates i noticed,
Do you think this is causing my starting problem and my tappin problem,,
Cause i am strugglin 2 find an answer,,

as clipperjay says it could be oil starvation wich aint good for your engine oil wont get to the bores wich will cause the engine to turn slower and the tappets wont get oil which will cause them to rattle so could be a blockage wouldnt let the engine run like that worse senario somthing seizes up then need a new engine piece of mind is worth a gasket

Schimit has explained the workings for you but I would do the following:
It means draining all the oil out again and checking the sump for crap.
The oil pump inside has a metal mesh strainer that picks up oil and strains out any particulates!
I had some experience with them after awhile they get clogged up and as long as you remove it out clean with petrol or any suitable cleaner put a new sump gasket and give it a try!
If the pump is damaged its hard to visually tell unless your seals have rips in them, but means full strip down easier to just put a new oil pump. But if there is no gunk or ostacles its more likely the pump is finished!
But consider the following:
Worn springs and tapits worst case.
If the gunk has carbonised ie you find big chunks of carbon build up on the strainer and pump, it means the oil has been cooked at somepoint usually see this on turbo conversions where the poor 1.8 has not had an oil cooler added and the whole engine got too hot.

I had all my springs an tappets an cam chain done about 40,000 miles ago and i have took it back 2 my mate who did them an he says he wouldnt expect them 2 be gone again as there is no smoke on start up as of before i had them done

Okay hope it was good work
Just crack on with checking the sump pump mate and get back to us but start sourcing for a second hand one in good nick!

I looked on ebay an there was an oil pump on there 29 quid
Is this incorrect do you think, Cause you say try an sort a 2nd hand 1, This says 2 me that they are far more expensive than 29 quid

Mate thats not a bad price, but have tried GSF, ECP, Heritage, GPC vw auto parts, TBH any breaker yards should see at least one MK2 with its pump still in the sump!
BUT BEFORE YOU BUY ONE HAVE YOU CHECKED THE OIL PRESSURE FROM THE OIL FILTER OR HEAD?
I'm saying that you can check the oil pressure and compare it with others on here to establish if you do have a oil pressure failure. Unless you get some sort of VDO gauge or even borrow a oil pressure tester it might save some pennys, but either way you need to take the whole thing out and clean it up.

I popped into a local VW specialist last week 2 have a chat with the mechanics there, An they said if i pop it in next week when they arent busy he will have a quick look 4 me,
But i am trying 2 source a oil pressure gauge but as of such cant find anyone who has got 1,

Sounds like a plan mate best to get it verified first don't want you to spend your money in the wrong area!
The oil pump has no electrics its all mechnical which makes it hard to determine if its faulty without a complete strip down and checking of seals to see if its loosing pressure?
I don't think its a bad idea to strip it to clean the strainer though. I've seen one other situation where a rebuild on the head was done and something like swarf fell down the bores and it clogged things up without the rebuilders knowledge.
when you changed the oil last time was the sump nut full of metal pieces, or did you notice anything weird like oil coming out like piss?
