after my mk2 overheating ive decided to strip the engine down to have a good look at it, when i took the spark plugs out 2 were clean and the other 2 were swimming in oil !! does this mean that my head gasket has gone or is their another problem with the engine has anybody got any ideas to whats wrong ???? thanks

could just be the rocker cover gasket
-
yeh rocker gasket if its a 16v
-
yet it is a 16v what should i do about the oil on the top of the pistons to get rid of it then?? cheers

how do u know there is oil on top of the pistons?
top of the pistons should just look burnt from carbon deposits on them, anything else will just get burnt off
-
yeh it was because when i took the plugs out they were covered in oil so as they came out the oil dripped onto the pistons !!
-
if the bottom of the plugs are covered in oil then the car is breathing heavy and most likely needs a set of piston rings
-
This doesnt sound too good yellowGTi, if you have that much oil in the cylinders you must be burning it when the car is running, whats your oil consumption like ? do you have blue smoke out of the back especially when you work the engine hard ? what mileage has the engine done ?.
Not only may you need new piston rings but the bores may be scratched or barrel shaped meaning the oil is coming up from the bottom rather than down from the top if you know what I mean.
Oil from the top downover is a much easier fix that the other way round, labour wise and £Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£'s wise, if its the cylinder bores then the engine has to come out for either a Re-bore or Honing and oversize rings fitted.
Hope its not as serious as this for you.
Jim.
