+1 For what they cost to fit in time etc - Might as well put proper ones in!!
-
ECP and you can get forum discount
You will need a press to fit them.

Is that fitted? If so it's not a terrible price. You should be able to pick up a pair of reasonably good bearings for about 60-70quid. Plus 45-35 labour isn't too bad imo.
-
No, that's just for the parts. An extra £131.00 to have them fitted.
Thought it was a bit steep.

Yeah that is a wee bit on the steep side.

My Friend Who Is A MK2 Mechanic (also has 2 of his own) runs his own business in Sheffield - Autohaus Dolby - http://www.autohausdolby.co.uk/
He does all my Mechanical work!! Give him a ring...
-
I did,
And he gave me a quote of over £230
We use the same mechanic Ken...

Cheaper Than Buying A Press & DIY....
Plus you'll get a Full Back Up With Matt & Genuine Parts.... IMO It's not over the top.. If you take into account the time that it takes to do a set & Parts!
I would be happy paying it knowing that it's done properly!!

Swings and roundabouts I suppose. I know someone with a press and can get bearings a fair bit cheaper, but then I'm a geek and have known my mechanic for 12yrs +

im my own mechanic thats probably why im always breaking down lol

To supply and fit 2 front bearings?
That's a brilliant price.

You can buy an engine for that money!! Or a complete car! Do it yourself man! Even if you have to take a whole day off work to do it! Get 2 bearings for 60 quid (perfectly good), and take the hub to a garage to press them out and put new ones in, for a 10er. Unless you take home 160 odd quid a day its a cheaper option and you'll have learnt something. Even if you had no tools and had to go buy a 100quid socket set you'd still have change from your 250, and a decent set to maintain the mk2 with in the future!
-
I think its quite expensive too.
Febi wheel bearing kit here for £17.95 each

And if you F**K it up kill yourself, your family and some other poor bystander....
You are assuming that everyone is competent to handle such a job...

Its un doing bolts, and then re-tightening them. Even if you factor a haynes manual into the price its still worth it.. I know its not a 'beginners' job, but its not like you'd leave things loose, upside down, wheel inside out, bolts missing then go and thrash it.. If you've done it or seen it done, its not hard, just a bit laborious taking it all apart. I wouldn't advise a child to attempt it, but an adult who's maybe tinkered before, give it a go, be methodical, check everything twice, even 3 times over, from when you slide the jack under right until you lower it back down and re tighten wheel bolts. Or get a much better quote then save yourself the aggro if you're really not up for it?

I know what your saying & it's still not a job I would do and I have stripped a number of cars and swapped suspension from one to another etc etc... Plus you need a 2nd car to go and find someone who is willing to put the bearings in for you... Might sound easy - But it's not..
Try getting a cheap tyre that you have bought off ebay fitted!! Nightmare - My son has a BBS RM that needs a new valve fitting and he has tried every tyre fitter in Lincoln and no one will touch it, he has to wait until he's back in Sheffield and take it back to the guys who supplied the tyre...
I'm sorry but IMO £230.00 for the job done - with genuine parts & by a guy who knows these cars inside out & give's a cast iron guarantee - is money well spent IMO
-
Usual internet prices..
In surrey i reckon it would cost more like 200 quid to fit ONE bearing
Its a fair amount of work involved, i wouldn't buy off ebay, i would pay for OE ones, GSF or dealer.
Yes, it can be done cheap if you do it yourself, BUT not everyone has the skills or wants to..

I think you've hit the proverbial nail on the head there. I love the thought of getting it done by someone else but I don't have the readies to do so. Thus I've ended up becoming a bit of a dab hand in the garage and finding discounts.
-
I don't see the problem with buying something off ebay or online, aren't Febi OE quality?
I have trade accounts in all the local motor factors because I have a fleet of business vehicles on the road, alot of internet prices are not far off trade anyway. I remember showing a garage I use for my commercial vehicles a website selling tyres, and he reckoned they were cheaper than what he was paying trade, in fact I ordered tyres for one of my cars online and he fitted them free as he couldn't come close on price for the same tyres.

ive been doing my own cars for about 25 years self taught quite good now . started on escort mk1/2s which did about 70mph if iwas lucky wasnt that good used to have a bag of spare bolts left after every job  our cars are now mutch faster more cars on the road more technical if i was to start now it would be a bit daunting as when i was 18 i didnt think about safty just getting the car fixed and very unsafe so if your not sure of your computance get someone who knows how to fix it i may be the car coming towards you when your wheel falls off
-
im pretty sure i got 2 bilsteen bearings for £30 from one of the websites already posted, and £10 each side to fit if you take the hub into the garage with the old bearing already out. just use an old socket rouphly the same size and gently knock it out

Use an old socket to gently knock out the old bearing?
Rears, yes. Fronts, no.

its hardly like rebuilding the space shuttle lol
if you have some diy slills , unbolt the strut /leg and take it down to a garage on a sat afternoon , they will press the new one in for £10 cash

Depends where you are, who you know.
I've never found a garage willing to do it that cheap round here.
-
well yeah..i try the dirty backstreet places or tyre centers , a main dealer wont be doing it for £10
-
Sorry to 'plug' the enemy, but clubgti has a full guide, including pics I think of how to remove + refit wheel bearings if you're totally unfamiliar..

That's quite interesting, and if i didn't already have a press, i'd give it a try

if your diying wheel bearings you have to rember that it'll cost you to have the tracking and camber set up after doing the job, no point in doing the job for cheep if the car drives crap afterwards.
also a leasson learnt the hard way, under no circumstances trust parts bought off the internet you may think your buying branded genuine parts that may come in a box saying they are the branded genuine part but think carefully if it's cheep it may be to cheep and for a reason.
one of my customers had a very nasty shock, he supplyed a turbo for me to fit, that he had found and purchased on the net, it clamed to be a brand new OEM turbo cam with all the right paper work and packing ect, it wasent, turned out it was a copy that nearly killed the engine it went on

i have a hydro presss, but tend to use a simalar tool to above to fit new bearings i found it wasn't to good at getting them out tho, wha i tend to do is get the beariig center out then run a line of weld round the inside of the outer race to shrink it then they just fall out

Hmmn, I might give that a whirl next time round

I think i will just stick to conventional methods
