anybody attempted to fix rrod before? shortly be buying an xbox 360 with rrod, looked at a few guides on how to do it, anyone followed a certain guide and got good results? cheers

I did. I got mine back in 2006. Had RROD last year. Its fubard now. It did work for a bit but the main problem was with the gpu chip solder coming loose. If you hold the wireless association button on startup the red lights will flash a code to tell you specifically what is wrong.
The actual fitting of the clams is easily enough. I even nodded a better shroud for the fans over the heatsinks. But in the end it died. Be very careful when overheating the cup/gpu to reflow the solder. It insnt that effective and in my case, just fried the chip. Hence my xbox now in bits on the floor.
Your better of looking for a iirc Falcon motherboard.

My first xbox done it. So i fixed it following an online guide, can't remember which one sorry but the xbox only lasted another 6 months before it died again

I had mine fixed twice by a place in Nuneaton but it happened again a few months after and I ended up buying a new one. :undecided:

trying to weigh up the options, where the xbox will be situated (next to tv, as small room), i'm thinking if I fix one will it just overheat and break again or is it worth spending a few more pound on a second hand one, would prefer an elite as that's what i've had before and I always install the games to the harddrive to make it quieter, guess I could also buy a cooling fan..

Idea, by a model that doesn't RROD? Think mine's a Jasper model, so "apparently" doesn't do it any more.

reason I bought an elite. no RROD.
Best just to get a newen I reckon mate

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_hardware (scroll down to "List of revisions") - Mobo models, build dates etc.
Mine was bought June 2008 (Falcon w/175w PSU) and has never let me down. It takes some abuse too (many many hours), and its led flat on a shelf with approx 1" gap above, 1" on the right and 3" on the left, with plenty of breathing space behind.
My brother picked up an old Elite (Zephyr w/203w PSU) for free and had MS repair it (faulty DVD drive) for £65. On the repair sheet they claimed they'd replaced the motherboard as well. Its been fine for the 2 years he's had it, and he has 40,000 gamerscore, he's forever on it!

I picked one up at the tip and fixed it. It was an early one with no hdmi. It lasted almost a year, then I bought the new slimmer version. 10 months on and i have just sent that for repair, the controllers would no longer connect and the light on the front went out

my mate sorted his with the towel trick , look on youtube , but it worked for him.

bidded on an xbox on ebay and it went for £36, the seller said that I can go see it working to seal the deal, therefore means picking item up which I wanted to, but now he's saying it has to come from the factory straight to my address, so I've told him in the words of duncan, I'm out, rang a friend to see if he knew of anyone selling an xbox, he passed the phone over and said £40 tomorrow and I can buy one of his, bargain  just in time for the 2.30-11 shifts
