hi guys new to the forum and modified cars (although not vw's) been reading bits around the forum and theres loads of great info on here, so thought id start a thread to try and get some advice for my car
just got myself a old high miler with the 150bhp engine, have a few questions as i'm planning to have a bit of a play with it as im finding it a bit more sluggish then expected
first of is it usual for the revs to rise and fall on idel/startup sometimes the pedal even dips under myfoot without me pressing it, is this a sign of something wrong?
now as mentioned it feels a bit sluggish, but this may be due to my previous vehical list rather then the car itself, someone mentioned that the car may have adjusted to the previous owners driving style is this possible? and is there a way to reset this if it has?
now down to some tweeks, im after a farly subtle look and sound, but would hope to be able to push 250 bhp, although this would be a slow build up of parts rather then a big splash out of cash. like the idea of fitting other stock vw parts where possible, will probable stick a debadged grill on as mine is cracked, and look at replacing the wood effect trim (is this easily done? always looks like it would be impossible to get off )
now the cars done 120,000 miles is this an issue in terms of tuning it, guessing somewhere along the line theres a compramise with reliability.
so with that in mind this car was upped to 180 bhp so is it possible to swap a few bits over to get a 180 starting point? or is it not that simple? wouldnt be intersted in a full transplant if thats whats needed.
now i understand the basic principle of getting more air and fuel in and more gas out to make the car go faster, and with a remap to programe it all, but is there certain parts/brands that work better with others or can i just throw a random selection of bits together get it mapped and jobs a good un?
exhausts!! now although i like a decent sound to my cars, im not a fan of unwanted attention either so would not using a performance exhaust hold me back a lot? or are there subtle versions that are quieter that can be used, any thoughts on what i should go for if at all.
sorry for all the questions
Matt

Hello and welcome.
If you are gonna get a badgeless grill will be a good idea to get the bumper recess filled and the bonnet notch also filled. Seen a few that hasnt bothered and looks .
lol to get it used to your driving style boot it about a bit lol
Quite a few people on here put the air intake from a R32 on there 1.8t its know as the DSG intake straight swap with a little modification to the air box. Or you can always buy a after market Cold air intake like carbonio or BMC.
Exhaust wise most of us on here use Milltek or Blueflame. And you can get the resonated exhaust so it is less quiter. I use the non resonated and it is ok tbh. Nice noise when you boot it but nice and quite when pottering around town.

disnt u post this yesterday??

Get the 150 running right as a 1st step then remap it, if and when you want more power you will need to look at more work / mods.

your idle revs dropping will almost certainly be the throttle body needs cleaning, there is a guide on here how to do it or get garage to do it local one charged me £10 and was perfect after,
get your boost pipes checked there prone to hardening and leaking,
take it to somewhere local to you like r-tech or carbon chip tuning for a health check they will check all pipes and dyno it to see what power your getting
one thing with mk4's is if you have a problem your not alone theres always hundreds of others with the exact same problem there quite predictable,

yeah was planning the infills, as the lower bonnet has a couple of dings that could be soted at the sae time, do the infills attach and get filled sprayed in etc, they look like cheap plastic, so i guess theres some work so there not noticable. if it wasnet for the bonnet issue id prob just get a replacemnt badged one.
so they do adapt to0 driving style? how long will it take to learn mine? (thats the first time ever my driving and style have been used in the same sentance..lol)
on the exhaust front the millteks look good, but just to make sure ive got this right the resonated is the louder one, and no resonated is quiter, is there much difference between the two in terms of bhp? and also where would the full turbo back version fit in (louder and faster??) is there any grief that comes with ditching the cat? like mot, police, emissions etc? also do i need to alter the rear bumper in any way to accomodate any of these (rulling out the r32 style ones!)

ok so get the thing running right first thats definatly on the cards, it may not be that far off, ive just been on a bike for the last 6 months so by comparison it could seem slower then it is, also my car list include r32 and tdi150 (guess the diesels drive differently dispite the same bhp readings)
think i read somewhere the 180 has a slightly bigger turbo, is it that simple to just bolt of one from the salvagers? and bingo 180. then look towards exhaust, airbox, forge valve, and remapping!!

ahh good news if its an easy fix, ill find the thread for a read, ive had a lot of pipes go on other cars, so thinking about the harder/ performance ones you can buy, could save some faffing in the long term, is it just turbo pipes to worry about, or can you get a kit to replace all pipes under the bonnet?

Auq 180 has a Ko3s but I believe the main difference is the map, I will be honest and say that having driven a 150 and then mine standard (180) there is not a lot in it.
A decent remap transforms them however, mine is a different car altogether now.

out of interest what did yours map to Wayne?

Not sure yet, hoping to get it on the rollers this month to find, it is an animal on boost, guessing and aiming for 200bhp to 210bhp :undecided:

nice, will look out for the results :afro:

yeah mate as far as im aware its the boost pipes that need checking and im pretty sure you can buy a full stronger pipe set but someone with more knowledge will point you in right direction, very helpful this lot :D

What will it cost me for a health check( is that the same as rolling road) and is there anywhere good near Dorset ??

Most companies do that before the remap, not sure on anyone in Dorset.

Hi M4TT B,
Sorry to be an arse and dig up an old thread, I'm actually after a way to contact M4TTB. Sounds weird I know but I'm after this number plate and when I googled it, there was a link to this thread. I'm hoping he will get an email notifying him of the reply. I am wondering if he fancies selling this number plate to me
A bit cheeky I know but I've no idea how else to get hold of him to ask!
I'm not a stalker don't worry, just another VW fan after a plate for my car,
Sorry again for digging up an old thread,
Cheers all,
Matt B (too)

120000 miles doesn't sound to bad if the car was looked after but my car is at 141000 miles and the bottom end is gone. I would suggest doing an oil pressure test to check the bottom end bearings and also do a compression test to check rings and valves.
oil pressure when at operating temp
idle 17psi
2500rpm 50-70psi
