Hi ..
I have a mk2 golf gti, its all standard engine wise and it reads on average 28.6 MGP on the trip computer.
But really im only doing 18.6 :sad:which is costing me a bomb in fuel.
soany suggestions what it could be?

Blue temp sender makes digi 8valves over fuel
-
blue temp sender?
ive replaced the blue temp sensor.
-
If its K jet, that could be set up wrong
-
Have you worked out the real mpg figures.
-
^ yes ive worked out my figures on a website on a average over 3 trips too the fuel pump. average of 18.6 :(
-
18.6mpg?
I get and average 25.6mpg from the valver. Is that bad? That's autobahn driving though.
-
my fuel economy is real bad too just thought thats the way these old 8 valvers are
whats all this about blue temp senders is there another type? only have my golf 6 months spent a grand already on bits and pieces

Have you read my sig'?
It's true that whilst a skag habit is less socially acceptable than an old vw it might well be cheaper to support.
-
That said the 8v's should be alright on fuel, so if it's drinking very heavily it may well be something amiss.
-
100 mile to 20 quid in mine mostly town driving stop start....8 valve digi

In that case, I would replace the temp sender as a 1st step.
-
temp sender, ill replace that first.
Mines doing £30 of fuel a week, for 90miles on the motorway! not flat our or revving it like mad.
-
ive replaced the Blue temp sender, still no good :(
any other suggestions?

Check the timing, make sure you have no air leaks, see what condition the plugs and air filter are in, all the basics really.

I get 130 Mile for £25 ish Motorway & town...
I would do a proper check - fill it full of fuel, reset the trip and run it for a week then top it up to the top, and work out the MPG from that.... That will give you a proper figure rather than guessing...
Does it smell rich at the exhaust when warn & ticking over...

You should get around 40mpg on non town/motorway driving, bit more or less depending on driving style, 45mpg is easily possible should you wish. Thats around about 350-400 miles on a tank when you fill it from the red on the gauge (approx £60 worth).
You mentioned using a website to calculate you MPG, you can do it easily with the calculator on your phone....
1. Fill the tank till the delivery pump clicks off.
2. Zero your trip counter after filling up (the one on the clocks is best as its never off like the MFA display)
3. When you next fill up, the trip counter tells you how far you went on the last tank of fuel
4. repeat step 1, fill the tank till the pump clicks off.
5. take the number of litres bought from the pump display (LITRES) divide it by 4.54 to get it in GALLONS:
LITRES / 4.54 = GALLONS
6. divide the distance on the trip (MILES), by the GALLONS used to get MPG:
MILES / GALLONS = MPG
7. Do this every time you fill up to get a feel for what the car is doing and to see what difference replacing parts and setting up the engine has made.
good luck.

I can usually get about 65-70 miles on a tenner in my valver
-
i dont know what the fasination with how may miles per gallon you get you fill the tank you run out you fill the tank its what hapens in between that matters if your always trying to get good mpg you dont enjoy the car might aswell buy a g wizz

My 16V is the most ecconomical car I've ever had. I filled it to the brim in April and still have 1/4 tank left now.
-
Around town the 16v does around 250 miles to the tank, which i dont think is bad, can remember taking the 8v to Newcastle 11 years ago and the mpg was knocking out some 44MPG :smug: :smug: :smug: on the motorway, i was genuinely amazed at that i must admit
Must admit, i dont take much notice of mpg, just enjoy driving the beast how it likes to driven

yeah mine does smell rich, and the exhaust is always popping on un-burned fuel, so its definitely running rich in fuel.
Worth changing spark plugs, Ht- leads, fuel filter?
-
just rev the nuts off it and every body will think your  with all that exhaust popping
do you know when it last had a full service as if not you might as well do 1
-
yeah does sound good with the exhaust popping, but an expensive look.
Not sure on a full service but its had an oil and filter change 2months ago.
-
like mine had it about 3 months aparently had thousands spent on it buy the previous owner shame he didnt spend some of that money on normal wear and tear instead of just bling so far changed the plugs and leads blue sensor oil filter cleaned and reprimed the k&n still got to sort the handbrake ect ect ect
runs much better now was running like a sick pig when i got it best thing i changed was the blue sensor seems to have got rid of the unburnt fuel smell still chugs whens low revs but that could be the higlift cam id spend a bit of cash on a service

I understand your point but I think there's a middle ground. If you're getting 18mpg from a N/A 4 cylinder it might be worth considering fixing it or getting something fruitier. Like a V8. Something turbo'd? Or 16vT....?

i had a jeep cherokee for about 2 months once thought it was fine till i did an 100 mile round trip and it cost me £40 that was when fuel was 80 odd p lol

Currently experimenting with the valver. Brimmed last night done, 118miles of mixed motorway and town driving, got just over three quarters left. More town driving over the weekend will figure it out when I'm back down to the fumes which will probably be Monday.

I was getting about 100-120 miles from £20 Regular unleaded (@1.29 litre). Which aint bad for a 23 year old car
Enthusiastically driven though
