Ok i got a mk2 8v digi, 2 weeks ago the car starte then died on me with in seconds, ever since that the car has not started again for me :)
so i have changed plugs and changed the dizzy cap no difference, i checked my coil and cleaned up the terminals on it, so i take plug out of the head and you can see a spark from the plug so i know i got a spark, i took out all the plugs and cranked engine over and you could see mist pumping out of the engine.
so it seams i have a spark and i have fuel but for some reason the engine wont fire :(
ive changed my ecu and no difference and replaced some earth straps
whats next to try?????

Set it up using the guide in the maintenance section.
Timing has probably fallen out. Either that or plugs are on wrong terminals on dizzy.

i cant set the timeing withoug the engine running as it needs to be set at 2-2.5k at 6degrees, i can set the dizzy to tdc with the dead engine and twiddle it abit but i really dont think its timing, the dizzy haddnt mooved and if it did move it hadnt moved enough to stop the car running. the plugs are in correct terminals on the cap,
i really dont see this being a timing issue though :(

My valver suddenly lost it's timing set point. Parked up one night, wouldn't start the next. Took me and a mate just sitting there turning it over and jiggling the dizzy around to get it to fire up. Then it ran like a bag of nails before I took it to a rolling road for a full set up.

I'll try that later but when my mate finishes work, cant remember if already tryed that or not though, I was thinking maybe the air flow unit Poss has got a fault??

I've twisted dizzy while cranking and no joy :( I fitted a new coil to give me a stronger spark aswell, still not working :(

Are the crank, cam and dizzy aligned with each other? If so and you have fuel and spark, have you checked all electrical connections, and vacuum hoses? My next guess would be to swap blue temp sender with a known good one.

All is ligned up, almost had it fire earlyer by playing with the needle in the maf unit so I think it's the contact in the unit if I moved the needle up manually it would light the fuel but not enough to start car but seams like its probably the maf

do you have compression as head gasket mat have gone you nead fuel spark compresion and air to run an engine do you have all of these if so it should run

Head gasket was done about 1k ago, I'm sure it's maf after my recent test I took the plastic cap off the maf and manually moved the needle while cranking and it fired for a second, that's the most life I've had out the car for 3 weeks now so going to change the maf and see of it works :)

Most likely the ignition moduel ontop of the ECU or a broken wire/connector on the dizzy electrical plug.

If it was ignition modual on top of ecu I couldn't get power to coil or dizzy, I'm getting a spark at the plugs

You can get spark all you like, but if the timming is off it will never start possible Hall sender to throw you in the mix!
Defective Maf would have made it harder to start, but it would splutter into life in most cases!

im changing the maf unit as i defo got life while playing with the needle and the tracks do look like they seen better days, once i got a different maf in place i will work on the dizzy position more, its more or less in correct place, ive tryed 2 distributors so i dont think it will be a fault hall sender as both gave a spark, ill see what happens when i replace the maf unit

happend to me 3 times. I had fuel, spark etc. Wouldnt run. Deffo try the ign mod. Cheap as chips to replace

I have tryed a modual as I have about 3 and still no go, so far I've tryed 2 ecu's , 3 modules, 2 distributors , new plugs , ecu relay, new coil, the only thinky I haven't tryed is the maf

Definitely sure your belt hasn't jumped a tooth or two? Everything is pointing to the timing being out.

I'm with Slick here mate you checked all timing markers TDC.
I was in a simular situation and did exactly what you have, it was the bloody hall sender in the end for me! Unless there is a faulty HT lead which I touched to my dismay once :grin:

I will check belt hasn't slipped, the highlift with standard pully puts it out slightly anyway but think belt is ok, i have tryed 2 distributors and I doubt i have 2 with faulty hall senders but possible, I have tryed 2 sets of leads and 2 caps, I even taken the plastic ends off the leads so I can clip leads in to be 100% there connecting. I should have a known working maf this weekend so lets hope that helps me get life

I've learned to have a mates car nick his known working parts just to save time :grin:
Hey Dunc did you do a compresson test when you pulled the plugs?
One other thing I've known bad earths to cause major electrical issues even burn out good componets try a continuity test and see if anything goes to earth?

i havent done a compression test yet as my tester broke and my mate hasnt brought his over yet, but head was done about a thousand ago so doubt its gone already but its possible.
Ecu i have 3 ecu's and tryed them all,
I have replaced the earth from bonnet to wing and from coil to head, the other earths that strap to the head i have cut the old crimp loops off and put new ones on making sure i rubbed down the wire with wet and dry befor adding new crimp end :)
i cleaned up the earth from gearbox to the battery , so confident its not a earth
i did find it strange that the car kicked in for a second almost started when i opened up the maf unit (black cover) and mooved needel manualy makes me thing the tracks are f**ked and not opening properly

well looks like i wont be able to test the car much atm as starter just gone, all i getting is a click when turning key, i checked timing belt and all seams to match up ok

Dunc have you been leaving the ignition on? You know it can burn out your coil don't you?
Bummer the starter has gone bridge a screw driver over the terminals see if its really the start motor.
Have you advanced the dizzy when you started to fire it up yet?
I'm saying that if timing is fine (TDC) then adjusting the dizzy should bring it back into line as I remember you saying you have taken the dizzy off a few times?

ok i got her started, seams it wasnt the starter but the battery had gone flat, i gave her a charge today and put it back in and with the new maf the car fired in to life with some cranking :) , left engine running for 5 mins or so then had to go in to get some tools so turned engine off and wouldnt start again battery had gone flat,
im guessing this is bacause the battery wasnt charging up at idle very quickly or the battery is nackerd
im gonna run her for a while tomorrow night after work and set the timing so hopfully reving at 2-2.5k while doing the timing should help with the charge :) , if she still wont hold a charge then ill look in to testing the altenator and swapping the battery over
but so far looks like cleaning up the earths, new coil and plugs and a new maf and she working :)

Great news Dunc I was dying slowly....... :laugh: Have you doubled the earth to gearbox to make sure!

all the earths are new or cleaned up :) that was the first thing i done. if i didnt have the gutts to open up my maf and play with the needle then i may still have a dead car now, tracks do look like they seen better days.
i was thinking maybe that the head was f**ked as when the head was skimmed they has to take alot off of the head and we only used a standard head gasket as all i could afford was thinking that maybe head had had it but releaved that this is ok :)
turns out that my battery wont hold a charge now so new battery for me tomorrow
