Title: What wheels
Post by: Andyfitz on 02 May 2005, 11:45
Hi guys and gals,

I have fitted a set of 15x8" wheels to the DUB and they rub the arches like a mof**kas, I want to know whats the biggest wheels you lot have fitted to your MK2's without arch mods?

Oh and someone modded my front drivers arch in a car park yesterday it's now flat at the bottom

17's fitted straight on mine with standard suspension. 205/40 tyres i think - Maybe 205/45....

No offence mate but it looks like a monster truck! Needs lowering badly. Just my opinion. Like i said no offence.

Ha Ha!  to both of you!

No offence taken! I have been contemplating the lowering, just price really. I originally wanted the coilover style stuff but i am wondering if a 40mm drop on a Koni sport kit will do it as these are only £280 in comparison to £900!!

Any thoughts?  Or i could do the opposite and raise the suspension -  Get some knobblys on and point me at the crushed cars!!

Im sure ive seen sets of FK coilovers going for around £450 on ebay. Depends what you want at the end of the day. If you lower it you will have to mod your arches wont you.

Ah bugger, well i don't really want to go through the hassles of rolling arches etc. so i guess i will stick to my monster golf for the moment. Extra suspension travel is always good when you live where i live anyways.

Cheers for yuor comments though

i have et25 15x7 on mine and it scrubs the lettering of the rear tyre walls. i reckon if i went 195/45 tyres they wouldnt scrub

Mk2GTI2.016v - Not too far away in terms of the whole country, Richmond. You know it? Pics where taken near a village called Reeth. Thought i would make more of an effort after seeing the cool pics everyone else has, just a shame i am not so hot with photoshop!

Does anyone know if rubbing or not depends on how much the car is lowered or something to do with tyre and wheel size/offset or something?   I always assumed if you lowered too far you would get rubbing, so you guys with 15's that rub - just how low are your cars?!?

And with 17's is there an amount i could lower my car without having to roll the arches?

Cheers as always.

rubbing has as much to do with lowering and wheels size as it does with offset. i think you can get away with a 35-40 mm drop on 17's if the offset is et35 and you have a sensible tyre size.

mine only rubs at the back when i've got my 8 x 15's on and thats because you can't even see the tops of the tyre, thats how low mine is!!!
