As above really, I don't want a western digital or a seagate as i've had issues with these before, also I'd prefer a passport / portable USB powered drive and 320gb will be more than big enough for the data i will be storing on it.
Cheers

i've got a buffalo 500 gb one :) never had problem with it only cost about £30-340 :)

Cheers, where'd you get it from?

Any 'reliable' HD is only as reliable as the disc in it and that's not very.
Back anything off to two different units independently if you can, or get a mirrored Network Attached Storage unit, from a company like Synology. That way your data should be secure, if you mirror the discs*.
*until one drive corrupts and writes the corrupt files to the mirrored unit .

Cheers all, still looking, now need to make up my mind!

if you just want it as a simple hard drive with no company branding or extra software it might be cheaper to just buy an external caddy then put any hard drive you like in it :)

I have the seagate usb one and I am currently trying to back up all my data. Its about as sh1t as they come... had just 191mb of data transfering for the last 40mins or so
Tried transfering all 130GB previously only for it to do nothing but tell me its going to take a long time.. and seemed to be transfering the same jpeg for over an hour!!

I wouldn't touch Seagate with a barge pole after thehassle I have had with my old one. I have had it for a couple of years and rarely used it, plug it in now and I can see the file structure of what is on it, but cannot access anything on it. It has what is affectionately known as "the click of death"!
