yep, im 2mins from j25, i can hear sirens, helicopters the lot. been going on for some hours now, all because of the carnival.

also in bridgwater we had the supporting wall and half a road off the main river collapse due to high tides and heavy rain.

so police are manning the carnival, the collapsed wall and road, evacuating local residents incase of flooding and more road damage and the 25car pile up on the motorwayl. they are getting the army in for support on the M5

I was only discussing with a couple of mates that there hadn't been any of these mega-crashes for years now the other day.

As I remember there was a real spate of them back in the 80s and early 90s.  Don't know whether it's improving vehicles, improved warning systems on motorways, or what, but I can't remember anything of this scale in the UK for a few years now.

Drive to the conditions and leave plenty of space in front of you, people.  Keep safe.

Not good. supposed to be going up to Bristol today for a 50th tonight, and a christening tomorrow too. Better find an alternative route.

Just think.
All those people not coming home tonight, could have been someone you know.
All their dreams, plans, hopes, arrangements etc all gone.

Bloody horrific

I wish simulated fog could be part of the driving test. Maybe people would be a little more sensible. Terrible things like this need not happen

Literally just after a slip road onto the motorway by the looks of it. Obviously someone trying to merge onto it in fog. Sad.

It's quite close to here. Heard the ambulances. Coincidence it was right next to Taunton RFC fireworks night? Distraction could have been a factor here.

They were saying on the news earlier it is something they are looking at.

Very sad times for all those that have lost loved ones

Just passed through, took almost 5 hours from Plymouth to Bristol, roads were eerily quiet both sides but jam packed a mile or so each side and on the back road between Taunton and bridgewater. Also the carnival that was planned has been called off, and they were all pulling out with escorts. If it was visible from the carriageway, it could have caused distractions too. Mother in law was travelling southbound last night after meeting her nephew just back from afghan with 1 rifles, and said they could barely see the front of the car, the fog was so bad too. As said the accident happened literally as the slip road merged onto the carriageway too.

I must've missed being involved in this by about 10 mins - I was travelling southbound and think the fireworks at the RFC were just finishing.  The fog had been present all the way down from at least Bridgwater North, but probably only started for those coming North at J25...  The fireworks in combination with the fog was pretty distracting, as the whole sky at the time was lighting up, and the smokey tendrils of the last (huge) firework were drifting over and down onto the carriageway as I went past.

Just horrible.  At least they haven't found the bodies they were expecting to find overnight, but seven is seven too many :(
