Title: Fogged Up Windscreen - Solutions ?
Post by: crimsonfin on 02 November 2011, 08:54
Well its about that time of year again when each time i get in the car I need to spend 5 minutes waiting for the air con to demist my bloody windscreen !!!  Another month then i get the added joy of having to defrost the interior glass as well as the exterior.

Other than giving it a really good clean has anyone got any good solutions to this or have they used either of the Anti Fog products in this link (http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/products/products/204747/antimists.html) ?

RainEx is meant to be really good.

Other option is to buy a bulk load of silica packets and stick them in a box under your seat.

Plus check carpets for moisture in foot wells as water has to be getting in from somewhere in order to coat the inside of the screen.

Think I have some RainEx somewhere so will give that a go.

Out of interest how many silica packets is considered "bulk" ?

My Audi never used to mist up, ran the aircon all the time all the way through the winter too, but this new fandangled Mk6 seems to mist up like Pamela Anderson's filming on the back seat in this cooler weather!

+1 how much is considered bulk silica packets to liberate about the vehicle.

You wont need that many. I just put a few on the back seats and some in the sidepods and they did the trick.

according to my local packaging company...you need to use 5g per cubic foot

would guess about 100 cubic feet (5 x 5 x 4)...therefore 500 grammes...?

I stand to be corrected on this...?

I would check all your cabin filters and air vents. Wifes Mini did this and since cleaning them out the problem has not been back. Also keep your air con on all year round

Replace the pollen filter, that will help...................

found an online guide (http://chrishowells.co.uk/?p=606) to show how to change this .

anyone know cheapest place to get one ?  Europarts show a bosch model (http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_Polo_1.2_2003/b/Bosch/p/Car-Parts/Engine-Parts/filters/pollen-filter) for £10.08 (delivered) but 25% forum code doesnt work (looks like min spend is £20).  Also looks like there are 2 options a standard filter or an Activated Carbon filter (which supposedly reduces odours)

also im sure mine was changed as part of my last service (7 months ago) so surely it can't be done already ?

I had the same problem. Brought some silca bags which helped a little.
I read somewere that if the inside of your windscreen is dirty then this can give the moisture something to cling to. So I brought some top of the range car glass polish and gave the windscreen a good old polish. Even though it did'nt look dirty you'll be amazed at the crap it removes. It seems to have worked , as I hav'nt had the problem since....

Quick blast on the aircon and its all sorted...you moany buggers

And yes the mk6 is worse...they both run this minimum 2% aircon permanently dont they...thats why the mk5 had issues with the compressor going t1ts up so often until they brought out a diff compressor...
