Title: Mk2 '89 Golf gti cambelt change
Post by: solarized on 01 May 2005, 11:54
Hi all,
Gonna change cambelt & tensioner on me 89 8v gti. Tempted to have a go meself, but don't wanna fk it up. Wouldnt say I was an experienced diy mechanic, but done stuff like brake calipers & service stuff before, though never a cambelt - don't know if I trust meself enough - dont want it going snap on me!  What do people think ? Have a go, or garage job ? Anyone got any tips for if I decide to have a go?
Cheers,
Solarized.

Unless you know what you are doing I'd get a proffessional to do it, probably cheaper in the long run as I guess you'd need to know the timing to set it up right. I got mine done the other month, ok its a mk1 cab but it was £112(ish) to do and the parts were priced at tensioner £25(ish), belt about £12, both from VAG and £60 labour and VAT on top.  :undecided:

I got the cambelt, tensioner and fan belt changed on my 89 16V last week.  it cost £120 in total.  I was in a similar position to you and contemplated doing it myself, but i'm glad i got it done by a garage as I have full peace of mind.
