Title: twit nav recommendations please - DID NOT WORK
Post by: scarr89 on 31 October 2011, 21:45
As above...Moved to a new area, do not have a clue where I am plus there are lots of speed cameras and I don't have the time to read a map or google me just wanting to nip the local Tescos

So I am giving into modern society and buying a satnav...Any good one out there you guys are using ?

Cheers

What are your requirements?

Is it going to be used constantly, or just occasional use?
Is it just for UK, or may be used abroad at all?
Would traffic rerouting be of any interest?

Basic TomTom would be my recommendation, avoid the Start though, the menu on those is annoying.
Garmins are also OK, but the TomTom is easier to get on with.

I should of put this in the OP, my bad. For occasional use but maybe with traffic rerouting also...I'll have a look at those bad boys!

What phone do you have? Most smartphones have satnav capability, either built in or as an App you can download for free / pay for. Usually cheaper than the cheapest satnav and you can get a car mount for the phone.

Galaxy S. I have used this before, once. It was ridiculously slow to react, loses my position constantly and tell me turn around while going down a motorway. I just feel with the current state of the roads, ie road works everywhere my phone just wouldn't be able to cope...Unless there is another app that does it better. I'll have a goosey  :undecided:

I've never had a problem with the Google Navigation app on my older, slower phone.

There are other free apps, not as good as the Google Navigation app though:
https://market.android.com/search?q=navigation+uk&so=1&c=apps

Also the paid for version of Navigon, CoPilot etc

Just giving you an alternative to having yet another device.

Yeah, I got one for my step-dad too. The TomTom refurb shop online sells em cheap too (~£80) with a free case :)

I've got Google Navigation on my phone (which is awesome).

The problem with using an app on your phone is you either need to have a good data connection to download map data while driving or you have to get an app that lets you download the maps in advance.

When we moved to a new area 3.5yrs ago, we bought a sat nav. It's a NavMan F20. Still works fine and just bought updated maps earlier this year with European coverage.
It's not perfect, but it's good for the odd few times a year we use it.

How good is it at re routeing you if it picks up that there is a jam, and how well does it know if there is a jam or not?

I can't comment, I've not really had that situation happen when using it.

Irrelevant, but my Mini's built-in sat nav has TMC support and works a treat, I've dodged 3x major traffic jams on the M6 with ease in the past year.

Went and purchased the XL2IQ route twitnav...now, has anyone got this and had experience of it re routing you via the live IQ route updating feature...want to know how effective it is and weather you have to turn it on or such  :undecided:

I was under the impression that it re routed you if it detects a hold up? I was sat in a Q for 20minutes...was not happy. Or have I got the wrong idea of the tomtom?
