Title: mk 4 problems
Post by: bank on 01 May 2005, 08:51
I've got a '98 mk 4 1.8 20v GTI which has developed a number of intermittent faults.

These include:-

- Erratic idle speed.  Usually the idle speed sits around 800rpm but occasionally it races to around 1500rpm.

- Starting problems.  Ususally the car had always started first time no problem.  However, more frequently I find if the car doesn't fire first time it is a complete pig to start taking 5 or 6 attempts.

- Hesitant acceleration, again Intermittent.

Can anybody out there offer any advice?

Cheers

Steve

start with the throttle body as reccomended, then after that It may well be two things, water temp sensor (abt £20) from VAG, easy to replace, then theres the MAS (Mass air sensor) this is a common problem but not so cheap!

i'd say temp sensor.. fits the symptoms exactly and is a very common fault.

Thanks for your replies chaps, changing the water temperature sensor seems to have done the trick.
