Im 95% sure my ICM unit has fried on my 1999 1.8T, car will have bad idle(very up down not actually stalled yet though) and decreased power going through the gears. Ive ordered a new one from ebay but im wondering what effect it will have on the car if i keep driving it in current state.
I came to above conclusion by reading other posts, previous owner fitted K&N ind kit so the ICM was just left floating around in the bay (guys a tool) when it was attached to side of air box to prevent over heating i recon.
Any tips on this would be awesome as all ive had is problems with my new golf so far all cheap fixes though which is ideal. If any one has had the same problem where did you relocate the ICM unit to keep cool?
Thanks

mines always been cabletied to plastic box behind airbox ,still there now even tho ive refitted original airbox
-
I have the normal air box thinking of just fitting it back to standard not really sure my dirty old cone is doing much tbh. Theres a bit under were the airbox was i think its the wheel arch Bosch say the unit should be glued using heat conductive paste to some thing cooling ie air box or some thing simelar i think that will do nicely.
Has yours ever over heated?
-
touch wood  never had any problems i was running pipercross induction kit and cabletied it on then decided to smooth the airbox and fit pipercross panel and left the icm where it was
-
What do you mean smooth the air box?

think this will help with smoothin the airbox
-
Thanks for the link looks pretty easy to do, currently have a K&N fitted do you think i smooth the air box it would be worth putting the air box back on or sticking with the K&N?
-
im sure the k&N filters dont do them any good is it a panel filter or cone
-
Its the cone version, really dirty i ordered the cleaning stuff but its not arrived yet
-
think its the oil in those filters thats the prob personally i would go back to standard or a decent panel filter
-
your not the first person to say that tbh. I think im going to use that guide and put the old box back in. I have about £1200 budget to get more the car im hoping this is plenty but theres so much i can do with it

Correct, over time the oil can clog the maf sensor, Pipercross is a dry / foam filter and does not cause problems.

OK cool so when my new ICM unit arrives will fit old box and put ICM unit on the side were it belongs and clean MAF to be sure. Hopefully this will fix problem

what year is your car?

1999 mk4 1.8T

1999 mk4 1.8T
i would put the standard airbox back an maybe a pipercross filter as wayne has said
-
ok will do, this is the 4th or maybe 5th problem ive had with the car since buying (2 weeks ago lol)
I really wanna get the car remapped and exhaust fitted but i want to make sure its running well first.
Do you know much about ICM units?
-
Icm??? Ignition amp?
-
yeah they seem to have many names ICM unit, Ignition AMPs and a few more ive seen, part no: Bosch 4D0 905 351, Hitachi do one the same just different fittings.
any ways mines fried cause the last guy who owned car fitted a K&N then left the ignition AMP/ICM unit to just float around the side. I think its got too hot and burnt out the little wires inside. Its meant to be fitted to side of the air box to keep cool
Question was car still runs just really bd idle and a loss of power, if i drive the car still am i causing more damage or is ok? It seems to run fine no funny noises or any thing like that.

i would what until you get the icm. When mine went it sounded messed up ,like a retarded scooby
