Title: well sick. cylinder head blow.
Post by: nodster on 30 October 2011, 11:43
got up today and thought i would do a few checks on the golf and give her a wash.  so i popped the bonnet to find my cylinder head pissing out water. so it looks like a new cylinder head gasket and a rebuild.

Eh?

You went to wash the car, and just by chance - the cylinder head happened to blow, when the car was off and stationary?

I've re-read it a few times now and I still don't understand :( He went to clean it, opened the bonnet and the cylinder head blew?

** confused **

I think this is the bit you missed

Presumably he popped the bonnet, started the engine and then saw water coming out.

Oh okay. I don't usually start the car to do "checks" - oil/water etc rely on it being off for a little while.

You sure it wasn't a core plug that popped, versus it being a blown head?

No reason you can't start the engine after you've done the oil/water/fluids checks as the last thing.

Not wanting to cause a debate on how to check your car. But surely if you checked the coolant/oil - you'd notice a lower/higher level than normal or cross-contamination from the HG being blown?

OK lets start again. I popped the bonnet so i could check the oil water and so on. when i checked the water it was a little below the min line. so i had a good look round and found that the there was water leaking from the head gasket. is that plain enough for you pal.

Makes sense :)

So water was leaking from between the block and head? You said it was pissing out - but there's not that much water held in the head after the engine is off - so I'm just confused as to how the car would still be leaking (significantly) from last night?

I sine the leak when i started the car after topping it up. as i wanted to know why it was low on water. my mate  is middle of stripping it down as we speak.

It will be interesting to see if it is the head gasket.  :undecided:

Have seen a water leak from between the head and block before, headgasket split in a peculiar manner and reason was it had been done before and not properly cleaned up.

As long as it's not a cracked head.
