Title: Engine splutter @ 60 in 5th gear
Post by: rosco on 08 May 2003, 12:47
I've just bought a 1989 8valve. Its running great apart from in fifth gear around 60mph when the engine seems to be miss-firing when the accelerator is half way down?
however if i floor it, its fine?

Please tell me it can be fixed!!!

Hi there, I also have a mk2 8v gti, and am suffering a very similar problem, I have spoken to my local vw garage, who tinkered with it, but am still trying to find a remedy. If I find out the solution, will post it on here.

I had a very similar problem to you. I took my car to a rolling road and they found out that my timing out was by nearly 20 degrees!
My car car would drive fine when your foot was pressed down about half way but any less than this the car would feel like it was mis-firing.

The car had the timing reset and performs brilliantly now. I thought it was fast before but it much smoother now!  BTW it's a 91 8v Gti

Hope this helps.
