Post by: G.t.I-JOE on 28 October 2011, 23:37
:undecided: Hi all got a mk3 gti 8v, im lookin at a set of 17"s for it but the suspension is standard, will it look like a 4x4? will lower it at a later date but im too impatient and dont have enough coin to get both at the mo.

Depends entirely on the offset and width of the wheels and whether or not you want to roll your arches?

You can't go mega-low with 17"s without a lot of work so if you want your car on the floor then 16"s would be a better bet

That's what I did, they can look ok even on standard wheels, my old one on various standard wheels:

Once I took the arches off to gain room around 75mm front and 60mm rear.

Dead easy and I never ran spacers.

You will need to trim the rear arches a little.

 :huh:Trim how is this done?

The biggest problem with Gti's is that the trim acts as a water trap. You'll be very lucky to remove the trim and not find rust lurking underneath

Would arch rolling be as affective as a angle grinder? sound like it could get messy!!

Better tbh :afro: I only used a grinder as it was the cheapest option.

You have to drill out the rivets on the underside of the trim

You have to drill out the rivets on the underside of the trim

And if leaving them off you will need CL trim.

I take it drilling wont ruin the paint then?
